Persona Profile: Tatitem

Writer: Rochelle

Name: Tatitem
Age: 64
Birthday: m5 d9
Rank: Weyr Resident
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr

Physical Description of Persona:
Never a great beauty, Tatitem –Tati to her friends- has gained dignity with age. Her medium brown hair is usually pulled back into a loose knot and is starting to show strands of gray, and her light brown eyes have a rim of hazel along the pupil. A small woman with a large presence, she is a comfortably padded 5'4'', although few notice her height or modest curves when she's glaring disapprovingly at them. She is not visibly overweight due to the sheer amount of time she spends on her feet, but she will never be trim due to her habit of taste-testing whatever is cooking at the moment –a practice she firmly believes to be her right as Headwoman.

Emotional Description of Persona:
A firm but reasonable taskmaster, Tatitem can be extremely intimidating when necessary, and she has a knack for telling when someone is truly sick or faking to get out of work. Her sharp eyes and low tolerance of stupidity and laziness has terrorized many a spoiled candidate, and she enjoys tormenting drunk or hung-over riders. But although this often combines to make her a formidable personality, when not running the weyr Tati is an understanding person devoted to her family and friends. She does her best to remain fair and avoid favoritism, but is not always successful and has a well-known soft spot for riders disabled by Thread like her son.

Tati takes great pride in her organizational skills, sometimes excessively so. She keeps the weyr running smoothly and efficiently, and is always careful to allow for error in her plans. Consequentially, she gets extremely upset when her plans are wrecked without good reason, and her closest friends are the ones who know when to gently remind her that she can't control everything. She is sometimes accused of being a control freak, but this isn't exactly true. She likes her world ordered and predictable, and being in charge has simply proven to be the most efficient way to get it.

History of Persona:
Born to crafting parents in the Tanner hall before the plague, Tatitem was the third of five children. She was eight when the plague ripped through the southern continent, killing her entire family except for her older sister. She watched helplessly as Temer was stripped of her apprenticeship and married off to a journeyman before dying in childbirth with her first child within a turn. Then and there, Tati made plans to leave the hall, and at fourteen she made her escape with two other girls from the kitchens to nearby Dragonsfall. She stood for a few hatchings without success, but she soon met a young mining journeyman, Jerase. At twenty they married, and she eventually gave birth to three children.

After eight years of marriage Jerase started to develop a variety of problems, and a visit to the weyr healers soon revealed that he had contracted a wasting disease they were unable to cure. For the next three turns, Tatitem was forced to play the role of nurse to her dying husband, although a brief remission unexpectedly gave them Titase. To help Tati get through the long hours, the headwoman let her keep some of the weyr accounts, and she soon discovered she had a knack for it. When Jerase finally died, Tati took in two fosterlings, Milnex and Susha, in addition to her work with the headwoman. She raised them as their own, and is still on good terms with all the children, despite her bullying them into crafts to give them the opportunity denied her sister. As the years passed, she took several lovers, but they never lasted very long.

Having already lost her family and husband to illness, Tatitem received another nasty shock when Thread fell again. Her son J'ritem was nearly fatally scored in the first fall, and J'ritem ended up loosing his right leg and any good looks he'd inherited from his parents under a mass of nasty scars. When he finally recovered, she encouraged him to hang around the kitchens, trying to ease some of his new bitterness and depression with her presence. After seeing that her efforts helped him considerably, she started stashing away treats for the other badly maimed riders that often accumulated near her son. By the time Tatitem made headwoman, J'ritem could usually be found with a few other disabled friends at a small table in the dining hall, and Tati can often be found chatting amiably with them as she works.

Pets

Thief, Green Firelizard: aged 15, hatched m10 d11
Tiny and mottled looking, Thief is Tatitem's only by accident. A kitchen worker had recieved two eggs as a gift from her son and gotten permission to keep them by the kitchen fire while she worked -Tati just happened to be passing by with a roast when they hatched. Thief manages to get around Tati's normal irritation with thieving little fliers by waiting until Tati has taken a bite or sip of something and set it down before trying to snitch it, although sometimes Thief gets impatient and tries to snatch something that Tati is still eating.

Zip, Feline: aged 11, born m11 d15
Zip is a small and lean tortoiseshell tabby that seems to be made of pure energy, and is usually seen bouncing off a wall. The latest feline of a long line descending from Tati's first one at the weyr, Zip is enthusiastic about children, tunnelsnakes, dust motes, and anything else that happens to move, and generally follows them at full speed. He likes to follow Tati because he knows that if he waits long enough her grandchildren or a weyrbrat will appear, and they are always happy to play with him instead of doing their chores.
