Crayon Awards: Most Intriguing Male Persona (November 2006)
Physical Description of Persona:
Ishek is tall, is around 6'3, with features that are naturally noble yet fine. His eyes are an extremely light blue, constrasting with his tanned skin but complementing his sandy blond hair. An aqualine nose, and strong chin and jawline obscured by a sandy beard finish off his face.
Ishek wasn't born with a particularly powerful frame, but he's certainly no weakling. His hands mark him as no stranger to hard work when it's needed, but reveal that it hasn't been his constant companion either. His tall and naturally lanky frame could easily be considered imposing when one factors in the strength he's developed over the Turns. He is attractive in the regal sort of way.
Emotional Description of Persona:
Ishek has a quick and analytical mind. He is creative, versatile, imaginative, and ambitious. A powerful sense of independence and the urge for action and progress in all undertakings are strong forces in his nature that he finds it difficult to control. He feels happy as long as headway is being made, but as soon as he is obstructed or his freedom of action is restricted, he experiences an intense reaction and upset. Moodiness and depression often results from experiences or occurances, during which he becomes sarcastic and stubborn in his attitude toward everyone, even to those he is closest with. His constant honesty, dislike of anything but plain and straightforward speech, a powerful work ethic, and the refusal to ask someone he leads to do something that he won't do himself all combine to endear him to those he leads and protects.
Ishek's opinions towards females have changed during his life. While he has always believed a female's place is in the home, he was willing to turn a blind eye to unfeminine activities, so long as the female kept to her duties in the home as well. He enjoyed his wife Shama's companionship outside of the typical husband-wife relationship. After his wife's accident, however, Ishek became guilt-ridden; he felt that his permissiveness lead to her death. As a result, he now frowns upon women doing anything unseemly- not because he feels they cannot do it because of their gender, but because he feels that if women keep to their traditional tasks, nothing will happen to them.
History of Persona:
Ishek is the second son and middle child of a prosperous minor holder in the Garnet Valley territory. His father died when he was 11. He remained at the Hold, rather then take up a craft, and served as an errand boy for the Steward. Ishek learned about Hold management and assisted his brother in returning the Hold to its prosperous state.
Ishek was 17 when he first met Shama, the beautiful 14-Turn-old daughter of another minor holder. He had been riding a runner along the trails when he came across another rider, one he'd never seen before- he wouldn't normally have stopped to talk, but the sight of the long braid of hair flying behind the rider intrigued him. The two took a rest from riding and talked. At first Ishek was too stunned by her (imagine, a woman who did all her duties, and was unmarried, yet rode for fun!) to discover too much, and when they parted he was left with a vague sense of unease. But she intrigued him, and when they met again he impulsively offered her a private picnic. Soon an unlikely friendship formed, and the two became riding companions every sevenday.
When Shama was 17 Turns, he proposed to her. The match seemed perfect, and both were very happy. An indication of their similar mind came with their wedding gifts for each other- he gifted her with a gold firelizard, while her gift to him was a brown. For the next 10 Turns, they worked together beautifully. Shama settled into the life of a Holder's wife somewhat reluctantly- though she was good at the womanly arts, she loathed them. Ishek was of two minds, wanting his wife to be the perfect woman for him but wanting her to be happy. Finally they agreed that she would be the perfect Lady every day but the restday, when she could be herself. In that way he was able to keep the unconventional spirit of his beloved wife while having a traditional marriage.
Ishek's powerful work ethic meant he was often away from his wife for long periods of time, either out of the Hold or working such impossible times that he came home and collapsed for a scant few candlemarks of sleep before getting up again. He managed to get as many restdays with his wife as he could, though. The lack of time together didn't dissolve their passionate love for each other, though it did, perhaps, contribute to the lack of children.
As Turns passed and Ishek showed no sign of easing his workload, Shama became restless and unhappy. Ishek, determined to spend time with her, began allowing her to come along and spend time with him while he was working, even if it was just bringing him refreshments or simple tasks. He also began allowing her to do more of her 'unwomanly' things when he wasn't around, a fact that would lead to tragedy later.
Shama was only 27 when she disappeared one restday. Bandit involvement was suspected. Her firelizard came back creeling in distress and sending images of pain and hurt, and her runner was found lamed later in the day. Ishek dropped his work to search for her. Days passed with no sign of her. When her flit hopped /between/ with cries of distress and didn't come back to her brown mate, he feared her lost- a fear that would prove true when her beaten, abused, and starved body was found the next day.
If Ishek had been considered a workaholic before, he was even more so now. He threw himself into his work with the only sort of passion he showed in his life. Love and caring and others held very little interest for him. When his sister needed his help he was quick to take her in, but other then that his passion for everything was gone. All that keeps him around is his work, his devotion to making sure that those under his protection were kept at the best possible conditions.

Yimas, Brown Firelizard: aged 24, hatched m6 d23
Yimas is quite an eyecatcher. The feature of his that first catches the eye of most people is his beautiful shade of brown. It looks like rich fertile soil, or perhaps the darker mud along a riverbank, and is spread relatively uniformly over his body. His coloration, however, is the only impressive part of him. The rest of Yimas is average. He's not too large for a brown, falling in the medium-to-slightly-low range of the size spectrum. He's not heavily-built or sturdy, like browns are so often stereotyped to be. He's not small-boned and designed for agility like his blue or green brethren either. He's just average. His wings are a bit small in proportion to his body, but it doesn't impede his flight. His tail's also a little bit too long, but Yimas doesn't mind; his little brain registers the extra length as useful to wrap around the neck of whomever he's perching on at the moment.
Yimas is relatively mature- for a firelizard, that is. Unlike the typical hyperactivity of actions, emotions, and mind inherent to his species, he is more reserved, content to perch on his owner's arm. If firelizards could be said to have chronic self-esteem problems, then Yimas would have a major one. For some reason, he believes he's almost worthless and unliked by others. He adores his person completely, and is very protective of said person. As long as his person nurtures him and gives him love and affection, he's fine; if he feels neglected he gets quite upset. Yimas prefers to take a dignified perch on his person and observe events from afar. He's curious about people and pets, and adores dragons, but he doesn't fly around and pester them unless he knows they won't mind. Around other firelizards he's quiet. After losing his golden queen, he has become withdrawn and rarely participates in mating flights. Occasionally he'll get into randomly hyper moods where he behaves more like a normal flit, but these are rare. The end result is a reasonably calm flit who prefers to stay with his owner more then anything else. Some hypothesize that Yimas' quiet is due to Ishek's depression, as it began after the loss of Shama; it is not entirely related however, as he was always a quiet flit. He is reliable when it comes to message-sending.
