Rank: Master Dolphineer
Location: Dolphin Hall, Dolphin Cove Weyr
Craft: Dolphineer
Craft Rank: Master
Physical Description of Persona:
Mahantan stands an even 6' and weighs about 200 lbs. His hair is chestnut brown, his eyes dark blue. He is deeply tanned and has very muscular arms and legs from all those turns of swimming. He is very easy-going, unless someone is cruel to a dolphin -- he is totally intolerant of abuse of the dolphin-human pact.
Emotional Description of Persona:
Mahantan is very easy-going, unless someone is cruel to a dolphin -- he is totally intolerant of abuse of the dolphin-human pact. His teaching style is very straight-forward, expecting the younger dolphineers (especially his daughter!) to listen and to follow his instructions. His reasoning is that what they do could mean life or death for dolphin and dolphineer. In his personal life, he tends to be more reserved, not showing his emotions. With his daughters back in his life, he has tried to be more open with his feelings for them, but does not always succeed at this.
History of Persona:
Mahantan was the son of beastcrafters and grew up around animals. He spent his early turns planning to apprentice at the Beastcraft Hall. However, when he was eleven turns old, he accompanied his parents on a herding trip and caught his first glimpse of the sea. He begged them for the next year, and they finally gave in and apprenticed him as a seacrafter.
Unfortunately, Mahantan found that he suffered from seasickness. While leaning over the rail and losing his breakfast during choppy seas, he was jolted overboard and rescued by dolphins. In their brief conversation, he realized that he would not have to give up the sea or animals, but could become a dolphineer.
Mahantan worked his way up through the ranks with the approval of the dolphins. The local podleader saw promise in the young man and encouraged him to swim with them, particularly with one mother and her newborn calf As a result, as soon as Forrel reached maturity, she became his official partner.
He married shortly after receiving his mastery at age 30, to a woman suggested by his parents. She produced a son and two daughters for him, but took them with her when she returned to the Beastcraft Hall, realizing that Forrel would always be the first lady in Mahantan's life.
Mahantan submerged himself in his work, though he still thought often of his children, visiting them when he could, but feeling them drifting away. It wasn't until his former wife took a new mate that he became involved with his daughters once more, when first Tala, then Senda came to live at the Dolphin Hall. He and his daughters stayed on to help with rebuilding at Topaz Sea Hold. However, after the direct hurricane hit of Dolphin Cove Weyr and the relocated Dolphin Hall in month 3 of Turn 4, the Hallmaster summoned Mahantan and he was appointed Master of Apprentices.
