Speciality: Weather Patterns and Predictions
Physical Description of Persona:
Zanyar is of middling height, but muscular from daily exercise. Daily candlemarks in the sun have also left their mark, giving him tanned and leathery skin and sun-streaked light brown hair. His eyes are muddy brown and usually narrowed, the turns have given him a problem with farsightedness that tends to make him squint. He wears sensible clothing, mostly dark colors--though he doesn't mind clothing cut to show off his nice shoulders and muscular arms, as they tend to attract far more women than his face, which is fairly plain.
Emotional Description of Persona:
A meticulous and particular man, Zanyar has become even more obsessive since he failed to accurately predict the damage from the hurricane that struck Topaz Seahold. He can talk endlessly about tiny shifts in weather patterns reported by the dolphins, and tends to bore anyone who is subjected to his impassioned lectures into near-insensibility.
Although Zanyar certainly has an eye for the ladies, he hasn't been interested enough in any woman to consider marrying her since his childhood sweetheart died. A few casual--and discrete--affairs have happened over the turns, but Zanyar has become fairly certain that he'll never find anyone who is as wonderful and perfect as his first wife.
Friendly enough with most everyone he meets, the one sure way to aggravate Zanyar is to look at his daughter in any sort of non-platonic manner. Zanyar has great plans for his daughter, involving Masters knots and maybe a position of prestige and rank within the Dolphin Hall, and has no intention of letting any foolish young men distract her from her destiny.
History of Persona:
Zanyar was born to wealthy minor holders at a northern Hold, the third of four sons and therefore allowed to chose what he wanted to do with his life. At thirteen he chose to apprentice at the nearby Dolphin Hall, finding little to catch his interest until he learned that with the information passed from pod to pod, dolphineers could predict changes in weather patterns. He made friends rather quickly with the daughter of one of the Hall's journeymen, a fellow apprentice who had been raised in the craft and whose skill far outstripped his. A desire to learn from her turned into friendship and then something a little more than friendship. By the time Zanyar walked the tables, he'd already secured Nalie's father's approval for their match, and they were married only a month later.
Pregnancy was hard for Nalie. Their first daughter was born on Zanyar's twenty-fifth birthingday, something he found to be a sign of great luck. Zanie was a healthy young girl, but Nalie's health faded, and her second pregnancy a turn later proved to be too much for her. The son she bore survived her by three days, but in the end Zanyar and Zanie were left alone.
When the call came from Topaz Seahold for dolphineers to come to the south, Zanyar ignored his parents protests and accepted a transfer, bringing his three turn old daughter with him. He doted on Zanie, raising her with the help of various foster mothers and encouraging her to apprentice as soon as she was old enough to be accepted. His overprotective adoration of his daughter has a habit of terrifying potential suitors, even though she recently turned eighteen.
