Pierka

He'd been waiting for the moment he could deliver his special gift to
her. It had taken far longer than he'd expected to finish it. He'd
spent a few hours last evening putting the finishing touches on it.

Knocking on her door, he waited for her to grant him permission to
enter. He hoped she would like the present.

"Come in," she called in a soft voice. The baby was asleep in her arms
as she rocked slowly back and forth. Barely a week old she was
learning his needs. She bent down to kiss the soft blond fuzz on the
tiny head. He moved slightly but didn't wake. She was going to have to
name him soon but she just couldn't find one that fit him.

T'nom entered, his special gift making him a bit clumsy as he came
through the doorway. He looked up and smiled brightly as soon as he
saw Pierka and the babe.

"Hi," he said softly, feeling his heart melt at the sight before him.
"I have something for you and the babe." He moved forward carrying the
special cradle in his arms and placing it before her. "I'm sorry it
wasn't finished sooner, but it took me longer than I expected."

She got up carefully from the chair and walked over with wide eyes.
"Oh T'nom," she breathed. "It's lovely. Can you put it in here?" She
walked into her sleeping room where the Weyr's provided and very
utilitarian cradle sat next to her side of the bed. There was evidence
of Z'ku visible on the other side of the bed but he was at drills so
they were alone for the moment.

"Of course," he replied, following her to the room. His eyes noted
that someone else was sharing the room with her. A pang of jealousy
surged within him, but he tramped it down before it could flair up. He
had no claim to Pierka any longer. He had no reason to be jealous.

Setting down his cradle, he moved the plain one out of the way before
moving his into place. He lovingly ran a hand over the curved edges of
the cradle that he'd worked countless candlemarks on. There were fine
etchings engraved along the sides of the cradle as well that had taken
him quite a long time to create.

Standing he turned to Pierka and smiled. "My gift to you both. I know
I haven't been able to be as active in your life during the pregnancy,
but know that I want very much to be active in both of your lives from
now on. At least as much as you will allow me to."

She nodded. "You're his father T'nom, of course you'll be involved in
his life as much as you want." She looked at him with a small smile.
"Would you like to hold him?"

His face lit up. "I would love to." He'd held him as much as he could
since he'd been born, but he still felt uncertain when he did. As he
took his son into his arms, he looked to Pierka to see if she would
correct his hold. "Am I doing it right?" He asked, wanting to make
sure he wasn't hurting the babe in any way.

"Yes," she chuckled. "You're doing just fine." She smoothed some fly
away blond hair and then turned to look more closely at the carvings
on the side of the cradle. "This is beautiful carving T'nom."

He only had eyes for the babe in his arms. He did draw his eyes away
to look at Pierka when she spoke. "Thank you. I wanted them to be just
perfect."

"It is," she smiled watching him closely. "I've named him Kazom," she
added softly. "It seemed to fit." She watched to see if he picked up
on the z and the reason for it. She didn't want to make a big deal out
of it but the one who had been watching over her to make sure she ate
right and that she always had anything she needed, had been Z'ku. From
the moment she'd needed him he'd been there for her, even though he
knew how she felt about T'nom.

He looked up with a slightly puzzled look. He was pleased she'd used
part of his name for their baby, but he couldn't quite place the
beginning. "I like it Pierka." Then as he said her name he smiled. "I
get it now! You used the ends of both of our names." Now it seemed
like a perfect name for their child. He was so excited by his
discovery that he never once considered the letter that joined the the
two parts together.

She nodded and smiled watching them. She was glad he liked the name.
It had just seemed to fit the little guy. Standing back a ways Kazom
looked so tiny in his fathers arms. "Thank you," she said. "The cradle
is beautiful."
