Jeyme had been waiting in the Weyrbowl for I'lan's return with Arippa,
and when she saw the woman on the ground, she wrapped her arms around
her friend, "Oh, Arippa! I couldn't wait to tell you that he was
found. Come on, he is in the infirmary!" She linked hands with the
lady of Green Valley and took her through the Weyrbowl and into the
infirmary. "He's still asleep, I think they gave him fellis earlier,
but.... At least he's here.. alive."
Over Arippa's shoulder she saw another passenger, taller than Reven,
but with nearly the same face. The man nodded to her, and fell into
step behind them.
"Thank you," she said from the bottom of her heart when she saw Jeyme.
She hugged her friend hard and then turned to walk with her through
the Weyrbowl and into the infirmary. "How is he," she asked a little
fearfully.
"He is..." Jeyme drew up short. For a moment she had not paid
attention to Arippa's clothing, because she was so use to the way
riders dressed, but seeing Arippa in black riding leathers made her
stop for a moment, "You are in riding leathers! How scandalous!" She
grinned, and then continued walking again, getting back to the topic
at hand, "He is different, Arippa, I don't know how else to describe
it other than that. They had to cut his hair.... He has lost a lot of
weight and," she licked her lips, "they have his hand wrapped. He lost
a finger."
Coran blanched, "He what?!"
Jeyme glanced over her shoulder, "Whoever had him... Well, they removed
it. It was badly infected when he got here, but the healers managed to
save the rest of his hand."
Arippa sucked in a sharp breath. She didn't know Coran hadn't been
told. "They sent it to us as some sort of aweful gift," she said and
covered her face for a moment. "Where is he," she pushed at Jeyme's
arm to get them going again. "Sorry," she murmured.
Jeyme piked up the pace and led Coran and Arippa into the infirmary.
The same young woman that had been tending to Reven before was still
by his side, "Could you give us some privacy?"
"Of course, ma'am." The girl eyed Arippa curiously before moving away.
Arippa rushed past the girl without paying any attention to her and
went to bend over her husband. "Oh Reven," she breathed as her eyes
scanned every bit if him she could see. Her hands went to the messy
tangle of what was left of his hair and she whispered to him. "I"m
here love, you're going to be alright." She quickly looked for a chair
and pulled it to the side of his bed.
Tears formed as she catalogued his injuries and the wasted look. He'd
obviously hadn't been fed and he had a fever. But he was alive!
Coran tried to assess Reven with healer's eyes, rather than through
the eyes of a younger brother. He took in the hair that had been
clipped short, the sunken cheeks, the blackened eyes, the telltale
bump on his nose that said it had been broken. Reaching down, Coran
lifted the arm that held his bandaged hand. The bandage was clean at
least.
Jeyme stood behind Arippa and gave her shoulders a light, supportive
squeeze, "Can I get you anything while you wait?" Reven lay perfectly
still.
Arippa turned to her brother-in-law. She trusted him to get with the
healers at the Weyr and give her the real facts about her husband's
condition. She looked at him with wide eyes. One hand dashed away
tears while the other held Reven's unbandaged one. "What do you think?
Is he going to be alright?"
"He is fevered still," Coran said, a hand resting on his brother's
forehead, "but they have cleaned up and treated his hand. Now we just
have to wait for the fever to break." He looked down at his brother's
face for a moment, "I am going to go speak with the healers." He told
Arippa, before turning to find someone who could tell him more about
Reven.
"The girl that was watching over Reven said he woke up once and spoke
your name. He is still in there, Arippa." Jeyme said encouragingly.
"Thank you Jeyme," Arippa said in a broken voice after nodded at her
brother-in-law. Relief, concern over his condition and just an
overwhelming flood of tangled emotion washed over her. Her forehead
lowered to her husbands arm and she fought the tears until she
couldn't fight them any more.
"Would you like some privacy?" Jeyme asked softly. She remembered
vividly what it had been like waiting by D'hol's bedside for him to
wake.
"Stay with me," was all Arippa could squeeze out as she reached for
her friends hand.
