Unfamiliar noises swirled in his ears. It didn't sound like Smokey
snoring, or Ehvan dealing a deck of cards. It didn't smell like the
earthen dugout.... No, it smelled... Different. Clean? Like redwort
and numbweed. Was he home? Had he made it to Green Valley after all?
He couldn't remember. All he could remember was walking, putting one
foot in front of the other.

Was he wearing a blindfold? Or were his eyes simply shut? He struggled
to try and find out but nothing obeyed. Discomfort must have showed on
his face since he felt a cool hand touch his forehead.

"Shhh, rest easy now, sir." It was the lilting voice of a woman.
Arippa? No, it wasn't the right tone.

Something was being pressed to his lips. Wine? It was definitely wine
mingled with something that he could not quite identify. Regardless,
it only took a couple of swallows before he was feeling completely
drowsy again.

"Rest, sir." The gentle voice commanded again.

Rest sounded divine, and the soft foundation of whatever he was lying
on felt exquisite. Just one more period of sleep, he promised himself,
and then he would rise and continue his journey home.

Jeyme couldn't help it. She was curious. Not being a part of a full
fighting Wing gave her a lot of extra time on her hands. She wanted to
know how the stranger was that S'avn had brought in the day before.
She had been in several Holds in the areas where Dolphin Cove flew
Thread so perhaps he might even be someone that she recognized.

She carried an empty jar in her hand as an "excuse" to be in the
infirmary. If anyone asked she would just say that she was in need of
some numbweed. Walking in she nodded to a few people she recognized,
but generally just let her eyes wander around some of the cots that
were housing injured folk.

**Dragonrider,** she identified one man as she passed his cot,
**dragonrider,** she identified a woman, **dragonrider, kitchen
worker, dragonrider, Reven, dragonrider... REVEN!**

Jeyme jerked herself around, her jaw dropping open at the sight of the
Green Valley holder lying in one of the cots in the Weyr's infirmary.
"Is this the man that was brought in yesterday?" She asked the
apprentice sitting by his bed.

"Yes ma'am. Do you know him?" She asked curiously.

"Yes! I- I need to tell the Weyrwoman." His once long hair had been
cropped short, and it was obvious that his face had been recently
shaved. Reven's face was far thinner than she remembered, but she knew
that it was her best friend's husband, without a doubt. **He's
alive!** Arippa would be so happy to know.

"How bad is it?" Jeyme asked.

"Beyond some blood loss, an infection, and some broken ribs, he should
heal well enough. He could stand to put on about thirty pounds." The
apprentice added, her green eyes going back to her patient. She
tenderly checked his forehead once more.

"Is he someone important?" The apprentice asked, curiosity showing in her eyes.

Jeyme tilted her head, "Kind of? He is married to a dear friend of mine."

Disappointment showed in the young woman's face, "Oh, I didn't know,
he wasn't wearing a wedding band."

The greenrider's eyes narrowed a bit, automatically possessive in
Arippa's place, "Whoever did this to him probably took it."

"Oh." The girl readjusted the sheet over the man's waist, tucking it
in primly, "Then she will be glad to know we have taken very good care
of him."

**I bet.** Jeyme thought, keeping the sarcastic comment to herself, "I
should go speak with the Weyrwoman. I will return later to check on
him." She left the infirmary, knowing that the infatuated apprentice
would take care of Reven. **The man picks up women even unconscious.**
She thought as she shook her head.

While she wanted to simply get on Quinneth and go get Arippa, her
pregnancy deterred her from being able to do so. Someone else would
have to handle the situation, and Cyradis would know the best people
to ask. Not to mention having a Minor Holder in the Weyr's infirmary
made the situation a more political one. Cyradis would know exactly
what to do.
