Holding her hand, T'nom entered the dining caverns with Meledei.
"Come on, I'm starving, let's eat," he said, turning to her with a
smile. He let go of her hand only to head to the food tables to fill
his own dish with food to fill his grumbling stomach.
"You're always starving." Meledei chuckled his hip with her own as
she slid alongside him to fill up her own plate. "I think it's a guy
thing."
"Probably," he grinned. "You know we've got_all_ this muscle to
maintain." He made a goofy effort of lifting his arm to show off his
muscle, before quickly grabbing his plate and hurrying away before she
could get her hands on him. T'nom was grinning like a man in love.
Pierka set down her cup of juice and leaned on her elbows as she
watched them. She sighed and looked down at her plate where her fork
had been just pushing tubers around. It wasn't like she hadn't known how he
felt about the goldrider but it still pricked her.
"Looks like you're going to have to work a little harder to maintain
that 'muscle'." Meledei called back with a laugh. She took up her
own plate and kicked lightly at him before she aimed for a table.
"Come on, I'm starving."
Pierka pushed her plate away. Suddenly the food didn't look all that
good to her but she needed to eat. She'd never had a spare ounce on
her body with all the physical work that went into caring for Liddith
but now she was having some trouble keeping food in her stomach. She
lifted a fork full of the tubers to her mouth.
T'nom hadn't even noticed his friend, Pierka, in the corner. His eyes
were intent on Meledei.
Dodging her kick, he carried his own full tray over to join her at the
table. He sat down close beside her, his fingers gently trailing
across her back as he took his own seat.
"So, did you have a good day today, Dei?" He asked, digging into his
plate of food with a voracious appetite.
"Not bad. I'm looking forward to leading the drills soon, believe it
or not." Meledei stabbed her fork into a tuber. "That will be
interesting, doing it on a regular basis. Oh wait, did I tell you
about that?"
He looked up at her words. His own fork pausing in mid motion. "No,
you didn't tell me. You're going to be leading the drills?" He set his
fork back down. His hand moved to rest on her arm. "That's awesome
news, Meledei."
Pierka sighed, she couldn't help but hear them both as they enjoyed
one another. All she felt was sadness at the loss of her hopes. T'nom
was a great guy and he'd actually been her friend and more, though now
that he'd won Meledei's flight it seemed like he'd forgotten all about
her.
She didn't know what to do but she couldn't just sit here and listen.
Pierka picked up her tray and took it back toward the kitchen and then
snagged a roll hoping the bread would help settle her stomach.
"I was afraid she was going to say no." Poor Pierka's thoughts went
unheeded by the goldrider. Of course, Meledei had no way of knowing
what was going on in Pierka's mind and she was far busy with her
conversation to notice the girl get up to leave.
T'nom, likewise, had no idea what was happening with his friend. His
eyes, at the moment, were only for Meledei. "Who could ever say no to
you, Dei," he whispered, his hand reaching up to to touch her cheek.
They'd told her about this when she was a weyrling. There'd been
classes on relationships and how they worked in the Weyr. It all just
seemed like so many words now. But the words didn't compare to the
reality of the feelings involved in watching him reach out and touch
her like that in front of everyone.
Pierka turned away and slipped out of the dining hall. She couldn't
make herself watch anymore. Whatever she decided she'd have to tell
him but not now... no... not now.
