Taeshin finished making himself a sandwich of some cold herdbeast meat
and grabbed a few pieces of redfruit to go with it before turning
around to look at the large dining cavern. He and the rest of the
Candidates had been given a two candlemark break from classes and
chores, and Taeshin was starving. He knew he had seen his friend
Tanom come into the dining cavern as well, and he wanted to talk to
him. Taeshin finally spotted Tanom sitting at a table on his own in a
corner. The young dragonhealer made his way quickly to his woodsmith
friend. Tanom was two Turns older than Taeshin, but the two of them
had bonded over the fact that both had been candidates for Turns and
had yet to Impress.
"Hey there wood worker" Taeshin called as he approached the table.
"You know, I know you are a good woodsmith, but I don't think even you
can duplicate a table just by looking at it" Taeshin said, able to be
his usual jokester self around Tanom more than anyone else in the
Weyr.
Tanom looked up with a snort and a chuckle. "Like you would know,
dragonhealer," he quipped with a grin. "Sit down and maybe I won't
turn _you_ into a wood carving." He knew Taeshin would appreciate his
humor. The two had been through so much together and they really
understood each other in more ways than so many others. They'd handled
their frustrations and disappointments in different ways, but Tanom
knew that Taeshin would best understand how he was feeling in these
days leading up to the hatching.
"Pern has yet to grow a wood fine enough to be allowed to have my
likeness carved into it my friend." Taeshin said, his eyes sparkling
with mirth as he sat down across from his friend. "Exactly what are
you over here contemplating anyway? I thought for sure you'd be out
carving something during your free time." he said as he began to stuff
the sandwich and a piece of fruit in his mouth, he was _really_
hungry.
"Nothing much really," Tanom replied with a shrug, though he knew that
that was hardly the truth. His mind had been whirling with thoughts of
the hatching which was nearing day by day, his strange feelings for
Meledei that had resurfaced again after he'd thought for sure they'd
only been some fluke in the past, and what he'd do if he didn't or
_did_ Impress this go round.
"I hear you're back on to Stand again. I was getting worried about
you, my friend." Tanom said as he picked up his mug and took a drink.
"_You_ were worried?" Taeshin exclaimed? "I thought for sure Janani
was going to make sure I was on the other side of Pern when the
Hatching came. And don't even get me started on Angdelouth" he said,
shivering slightly from the memories.
"But all is well now...and this time it _will_ be different...for both
of us" Taeshin said, his eyes gleaming with determination. "It has to
be."
"I hope you're right," Tanom replied, the light flickering from his
eyes a bit at that thought. "I promised Meledei I wouldn't leave after
this hatching if I didn't Impress, but truth be told, it's been on my
mind a lot lately. I'm trying to stay hopeful, but after so many
attempts," Tanom shrugged a bit. "Let's hope we both have a reason to
celebrate together after this hatching."
This time it was Taeshin's turn to look down at the wooden table.
Both of them knew all to well the pain and frustration of being left
on the Sands. The questioning and depression that could come with not
being found worthy by a newly hatched dragon. Taeshin did not know if
he could endure that again. "This time it'll be different, I just
know it" he whispered, though there was a force and a will behind the
words that made it seem like he was yelling.
"I hope so, my friend," Tanom replied, "I just don't know how much
longer I can subject myself to this otherwise." He sighed. "Then again
if we both are still there at the end, perhaps we should have our own
little party ourselves. We can drink until we forget all our troubles,
or we can just high-tail it out of here together." He sighed then
added quietly, "though I couldn't actually do that to Meledei or some
of the others." He picked up a mug of klah and with a snort said, "I
think you're right. This time it _will_ be different! Let's drink to
that!"
Taeshin picked up his own cup of klah and banged it into Tanom's,
laughing as klah jumped from the mugs to the table. "To all our hope
and dreams coming true at this Hatching." Taeshin said, a fervent fire
burning in his eyes.
