Jeyme really had no opinions either way about the departure of Saibra
to Dragonsfall, after all, she was just a greenrider and had very
little to do with the leadership. She was curious about Kapera,
however, and being in the Queen's Wing at least earned her an excuse
to approach the new goldrider.
"Kapera, good morning." She said as she sat down at the breakfast
table in the Dining Cavern. If she guessed right, Jeyme figured that
they were probably only a few Turns apart in age.
"Good morning," Kapera replied, smiling at the greenrider. "How are
you this day?"
"I am well, and you?" Jeyme asked as she began shoveling scrambled
eggs from her plate. Already in the early stages of her pregnancy,
anything meat related was making her sick, and so she was stuck on
eggs and fried greens. Eggs for breakfast, fried greens with vinegar
for dinner.
"I'm enjoying the weather and having an actual beach." It was
definitely going to be a distracting temptation, though the attraction
might settle down after some time had passed and she'd gotten used to
it being there. "So far, everything is great."
"Tell me about it," Jeyme agreed, "I came from Emerald Falls before I
Impressed so I am still really enjoying having a nice warm beach and
ocean so close by." Now that she was grounded for the duration of her
pregnancy, Jeyme spent a lot of time laying out and soaking up the
essential rays of the sun. Of course, she didn't stay out _too_ long
because she was pretty sure that D'hol would fuss if she let herself
get sunburned.
"I've heard Emerald Falls is beautiful. I'll need to be out that way
to meet the rankers, perhaps you can tell me if there's anywhere that
I can't miss seeing."
Jeyme swallowed a mouthful of eggs, "Just the falls really, and trust
me, coming from dragonback you won't be able to miss them. Emerald
Falls and the surrounding holds are generally very hospitable as
well." That wasn't always the cases with some of the Holds.
"Thank you for the information. It's always good to know the local
politics of an area, and I have so much to catch up on now that I'm
here."
"Well, being grounded as of late, I have had a lot of time to
listen..." Jeyme quirked a little grin, "And I am weyrmated to a
Wingleader, so if there is any information you would like on people I
may know it. Goldriders around here, though, are typically well
received so I don't figure you will be a stranger to people very long."
"I hope not. It's always weird to be new to a place - and more so when
you're in the center of attention." It was an impulsive statement, and
a bit overly honest on her part - Kapera wondered about the impulse.
"Weyrmated to a Wingleader? That must be a story."
Jeyme shook her head, a smile pulling across her face, "Yes, weyrmated
to a Wingleader, and when you meet said Wingleader- D'hol is his name-
you will probably think I am crazy." The greenrider lifted her
shoulders in a light shrug. Not only were she and D'hol Turns apart in
age, but the man's general stand-offish nature left a bad impression
on most people. They just didn't get to see the side of him that Jeyme
saw every evening in their weyr.
"I haven't met D'hol yet, but now I'm intrigued," Kapera said. The
greenrider was obviously affectionate and attached, so she wouldn't
try to step between them. She didn't want to form any discontent in
the wing. But the idea of a man who others didn't like, but could
still charm a greenrider - well, she'd known a few men who were more
than they seemed.
The corner's of Jeyme's mouth twitched, "Good luck, then. I know of
only three women in the Weyr that can tolerate D'hol, me, of course,
Cyradis, and Saibra, although now that she has left I suppose that
does leave room for him to make a new friend." Jeyme chuckled before
taking another bite, "And don't think I don't love my weyrmate, I do,
but D'hol is just a very polarizing person. You either love him or hate him."
"Either way, I'll have to work with him," Kapera mused. The
high-ranking people always had to get along in a professional context.
"So you two are happy together?"
Now that was a loaded question, "Yes," she said finally, "we are happy
together." She thought for a moment before speaking, "I got pregnant
right around the time of Quinnet's last flight, to which, N'vanik's
Loseth was the winner," she tapped her fork gently on her plate while
she spoke, "so there is a little contention between N'vanik and
D'hol. You should be prepared for that. It's palpable, you can't miss
it."
Kapera filed away that tidbit of information. Bronzerider with a
possessive interest in his weyrmate, who held a position of rank, with
a bone of contention with someone else with rank...could be trouble.
Could be fascinating. Ah, the joys to be found at a new Weyr.
"I appreciate the heads-up. Hopefully it can be mediated."
"It is fine, Cyradis keeps it mediated. She is a good peace maker
around the Weyr." Jeyme said, finishing off her eggs and laying her
fork on her empty plate.
"That's good to know. Diplomacy has always been the goldrider duty I
struggle with the most," she confided.
Jeyme smiled at that and tucked her hair behind her ear, "There is a
very good reason why I am not a goldrider, or a Lady, and diplomacy is
that reason." She took a sip of klah, "Cyradis is pretty good at being
diplomatic, if not a little _over_ authoritative, and then Saibra...
Well, let's just say, she handles her diplomacy best in the bedroom."
There were no secrets about the different bed partners, mostly
bronzeriders Jeyme had noticed, that were gossiped to have been seen
leaving Saibra's wey.
That sounded like Kapera's own methods - she wondered if it'd be
impolite to admit that. "Hopefully my skills will complement theirs.
I'm actually pretty good with the records, and I know several
goldriders who act like they're allergic to the room."
"Well, that I know little about. I think all the goldriders use the
record room, it's pretty public to most individuals of rank, and I
have seen Meledei coming and going from there." She said, mentioning
the Weyr's youngest goldrider.
"That's good to know. It's nice to have a balanced attribution of
things. You'd be surprised how unfair it can get." And now she was
almost babbling.
She pushed her plate back and finished the last of the klah. "What
duties do you currently have?"
"I miscarred early in my last pregnancy so I basically am grounded
from now throughout the pregnancy. I help out in the infirmary mostly,
doing easy things, cleaning tables, rolling bandages, and such. Today
I am putting their patient files in order." Jeyme answered.
"That's important work," Kapera said. She'd never liked the
infirmaries and had tried to avoid them, but after the last few turns,
she'd learned a new appreciation for the people who worked there. "Do
you enjoy it?"
Jeyme shrugged her shoulders, "It is okay. Since I came from the Hold
at such a late age, I didn't have a chance for a craft or anything,
and knowing how to curtsey like a lady and hold your teacup just right
aren't exactly noteworthy skills at the Weyr. The infirmary work is
something that anyone can do regardless of training." It at least made
her feel useful.
The goldrider smiled slightly at the way Jeyme phrased that. "I was
Holdbred as well." No harm in a small revelation. "Would you have
wanted a craft if you didn't Impress?"
"I was born and bred to marry some stranger for stronger alliances
with my father's minor hold. I never dreamed of a craft, I was always
realistic as to what my role in life would be. I was Searched at
twenty-one and impressed only a few days later. If I had come to the
Weyr at a younger age I would have thought more about crafting." Jeyme
tried not to dwell on the what-ifs because she was very happy with
Quinneth, D'hol, and the current life she led.
So much of that sounded familiar, sending a pang through the
goldrider. She'd _hated_ that life, escaped it as soon as possible. It
seems like Jeyme had been more resigned to what her fate could be. But
she'd been strong enough to accept Search and become a greenrider, and
that said something good about her. Kapera found that she liked the
other woman.
"Congratulations on finding your lifemate so quickly and settling in
so well here. I think I'm going to like working with you."
Jeyme smiled, "And the same to you.... Ma'am."
