Pierka

Pierka

She had heard, eventually. Dragons, especially green ones, were
horrible gossips. Her green had been chatting with a messenger from
Dragonsfall, and had heard of the recent death of a young weyrling.

Lillyth, so used to sharing everything with her rider, had passed one
the news without thinking.

}:Petrith is no more. And her rider.:{

**Petrith? who is that?** Dysali stopped in her tracks as Lillyth
was speaking to her.
A picture of Petrith came along with a confused sending. }:She was a
young one studying with Hasaarth.:{

Lillyth knew Hasaarth well; the bronze had trained her and had been
her Weyrleader too.

She stumbled a little and was immediately engulfed in memories of I'ster.

Lillyth crooned as she realized she had distressed her rider and not
knowing what else to do, sent to Liddith. Her rider had been happy
with that rider. Maybe that would be good?

}:Liddith? Can my rider come see yours? She is distressed. :{

}:Yes! Mine says come:{ came the almost immediate reply.

Pierka had finished feeding Kazom and just put him in his cradle to
sleep when she got the message so she was waiting on her ledge with
Liddith.

Dysali arrived not long after, looking slightly distracted. But she
smiled broadly as she saw Pierka waiting on the ledge. Lillyth
landed gently so as not to disturb the pair and settled in next to
Liddith. Who knew what green dragons talked about when their riders
were busy?

"Hi Pierka! I've been meaning to come see you and the little one, and
I could use a distraction. thank you for letting me come." Her
smile broadened though her eyes showed the truly disturbing memories
that had come upon her.

I'ster had been so little... so young. He Impressed at only 13 turns
and they had all watched out for him, her, D'ren, D'cal, even I'lan
had helped. He had been so special.

"How are you, my friend? You look wonderful! apparently having babies
agrees with you."

Pierka chuckled. "Thanks," she smiled, "though I still feel awkward
and unbalanced." She headed into the weyr. She led the way to the
fancy cradle T'nom had made and the sleeping baby within. Her voice
lowered as she stroked the satiny finish "Isn't it beautiful? T'nom
made it for Kazom."

Dysali was properly awed by the cradle and smiled at the baby inside
it, too. "The cradle is so lovely Pierka! that was so nice of T'nom.
And Kazom... he looks so sweet." She leaned over the cradle to
peer at the sleeping baby.

Then she looked back up at Pierka. "Luckily, dragonriders are too
active to stay awkward for long." She smiled. "Washing Lillyth is
great exercise, but I really get it when I have to chase my canine
down. Wags is not very well trained."

"Can I get you anything? I didn't bring treats this time, I just came
for a visit. But I'll get you anything if you need." It was clear
she was troubled by something, but doing her very best to hide it.
She was not here to share her grief with Pierka. She was only here to
remind herself that there were live people in the Weyr who might want
her for a friend. And to see the baby!

Pierka was looking for the signs of distress Liddith had relayed to
her from Lillyth but other than some strain around the eyes it wasn't
evident. She wondered if Dysali just wanted some distraction or to
talk. Either was fine by her. "Oh don't worry about me. Z'ku makes
sure I'm well supplied with snacks," she grinned. "Would you like to
hold him?"

Dysali was startled by the offer and at first took a step back from the cradle.

"Hold him? But I .. I might hurt him... and he's sleeping..." She
tried to beg off, but even as she spoke the denial, her body made her
a liar as it moved, almost of its own accord, toward the cradle.

She peered at him again, frozen in the looking at him. This was ... life.

"He reminds me that there is always life after death. He's so
beautiful, Pierka. That alone makes me want to hold him... not that
he's beautiful... but that he's ... life" Her hands rested gently on
the side of the wonderfully carved wood.

"Maybe... maybe I can hold him... But you'd better get him out." She
turned back to her friend. "I don't want to wake him!"
