He couldn't believe it. He just couldn't believe it. Chaysea-to the Weyr?
But she'd gotten herself a good position as Headwoman of the Vintner Hall!
Genna had gone away to Dragonsfall, sure, but she had Impressed gold and
brought honor to the family. Chaysea going unmarried to a Weyr, even though
she was a widow, meant she would likely never be married again. And her
brother knew what that meant for the family reputation. **Why would she do
such a silly thing? She didn't even go to Dragonsfall where she could watch
over Genna. Instead to Dolphin Cove she went**
"Hello brother," Sinla said as she swept into the infirmary and closed in on
Chupsin. "Did you _hear_?" There was horror in her voice.
His eyes swung to hers and the look on his face said that he had and how he
felt about it. "This is ridiculous."
"It is, why would she even _want_ to go there?" Besides from it being a
ridiculously bad choice, Sinla also hadn't a clue on what advantages Chaysea
thought were tied to the move.
"I don't know. I mean okay...she wanted a man-a young one. We could have
found her one of those here though." There were plenty-like that Corran
fellow.
"Yes we could have. She could have asked." Sinla sighed in desperation and
sank down in a nearby chair, rubbing her forehead. "Do you think our family
is cursed or something?" Not that Genna impressing gold had been a curse,
but she _had_ left them.
A shadow passed over his face. Alivya dying hadn't been a curse. Those
things happened. Sure, she had been pregnant with his first and only child
at the time and the child had been lost. Those things happened. Otherwise if
curses existed, there was no point in Chupsin trying to fight them when he
got his hands bloody to put people back together. "Don't ever say that."
Sinla saw the shadow, but for the moment she was too caught up in her own
distress to realize what it was about. "Why not? It sure seems like it is
sometimes."
"Sister mine, you have a husband with good rank. You have more than one
healthy child. You have a daughter that is a goldrider." He tried his best
to think of something else to say even though it was a struggle to think of
what he had to be thankful for. "I am well known in my craft and am a young
Hold healer for such a large Holding. I will be gaining my Mastery at some
point." He didn't bring up his other sisters and their families though his
mind went to them at some point. "We have much more than others."
A husband that she didn't love, a goldriding daughter that hated her. Sinla
couldn't quite agree on the blessings he listed, but knew she'd have a tough
time explaining that so she sighed and nodded. "Still, Chaysea's actions
reflect badly on all of us."
"The only option for them not to is to no longer treat her as part of the
family. I doubt many would make the connection since she went to Dolphin
Cove instead of Dragonsfall. Of course, she may not want anything to do with
us anyhow-which is why she chose such a path." He had never really
considered that.
"But why, in Faranth's name?" Sinla said shaking her head. It felt like
betrayal. She'd done Chaysea no wrong. Not that Chaysea knew of anyway. "I
just can't see why she'd want to be away from us so bad."
"I don't know either. Maybe you should write her a letter and see if she'll
tell you." He shrugged, not knowing what else to do. "Either way, it's done.
She's made her decision."
"I will try," Sinla sighed. "But you're right, it'd be no use dragging her
back here now. Did you hear of any other family members eager to spread
shame by moving to the Weyr? We might as well get it over with now, anyway."
She knew she was being melodramatic, but Chaysea's abandonment stung deep.
She herself had thought so often of leaving so often in the past turn.
Running away with Daimhin. But she couldn't leave her family, could she?
Then why could Chaysea?
"Let me know how it goes." He sighed and turned, ready to go eat some soup.
He had such a long day and news like this was not helping. Not in the
slightest.
"Yeah, will do," Sinla said with another long, suffering sigh. "See you
later brother." And with that she left to tend to her own lunch.
