"So, I hear you have been flirting with all the lady healers while I have been away." Karaleigh said to the bronzerider with mock jealousy.
"I've got to practice on someone," O'dan replied lightly. "It's the only way I'll learn how to win you."
"You think you'll find a woman like me among those healers?" She asked, eyebrows raised.
O'dan picked up her hand and kissed the back of it. "No, I think they actually like me."
"Oh, I like you, O'dan. I just won't have _sex_ with you. Which is good for you since you are in no position to be having sex with anyone," she pointed a finger at him accusingly, "especially willing healers."
"Well, I'd think if there was anyone I should be having sex with, it would be a healer," O'dan retorted. "That way, if any important bits get broken, they can fix them up again."
"An injury to any important _bit_, eh? Sounds so... minor." She couldn't help but grin. Only with O'dan could she be so forward in her teasing. Anyone one else would take it as a signal for lingering interest. O'dan learned long ago it was not.
"Want to see?" The fact that he knew better didn't stop him from teasing. O'dan was honest enough in the privacy of his own mind to admit that he would be disappointed if Karaleigh ever _actually_ gave in to him. His record for sustaining relationships after the initial thrill had worn off wasn't impressive, and he knew himself well enough to know that he was the last person someone like Karaleigh needed to be involved with.
"Ah, I've seen." Karaleigh said with what she hoped was a natural smile. It was pretty hard to form an opinion of his bits when there was a large gaping threadscore right next to them. Everything looked diminutive in comparison to that. She would have to wait until next time to form any opinion.
He couldn't help but laugh. "I don't think it counts if I'm bleeding to death."
She rolled her eyes. He was indeed incorigable. "I think your bandages at this moment would be even less flattering."
"We'll wait until I'm moving around a little before I try again," O'dan assured her. "Now sit down and tell me some gossip to keep my mind off my pain."
She searched her mind trying to think of some interesting gossip to tell him. Most of it was about him, and none to flattering. "Gossip? What do I know of gossip? For all I'm a harper, I spend most of time with my students and my feline."
"And you don't have any interesting gossip about them?" O'dan asked innocently, not in the least bit fooled. "What about my sons?"
"Oh, well," she gave him a bright smile, "your oldest has certainly proved that he has inherited the healing gene from your family. He has been handling himself quite well around the infirmary."
"Oh? I haven't seen him lately..." Of course, O'dan imagined Dantial would be keeping his nephew away from a glimpse of his father's maimed leg.
"Oh, but you should see him. He is proving to be quite the little man." She smiled at O'dan, proud of her student and hoping his father could be too. "He has proved he can keep his head straight in a crisis for all that he has been at it for less than a few turns."
"I'll have to ask Dantial about him. I'm sure my brother is glad to have another healer in the family." O'dan grinned. "He never thought much of _my_ healing ability... said I was too willing to use my massage skills for neferious purposes."
"Well," she smiled, "I'm sorry to say that he doesn't seem to show much interest in massage."
"Pity," O'dan replied, shaking his head. "Massage therapy needs men from our family with our clever hands, you know."
"I would agree with your whole heartedly," Karaleigh said as she gave him a reproving look, "if your hands could actually _stick_ to the therapy."
"Some women find my therapy useful for all _sorts_ of problems." O'dan gave her a good natured leer. "You might agree if you ever had reason to test _my_ clever hands."
"Ah, but if I did that it might spoil me for lovers for the rest of my life," she said with over-dramatic sarcasm, "and then I would spend my life wasting away alone and pining for the hands of a man who is off running around with some greenrider..." She heaved a sigh.
"Oh, there's plenty of me to go around," O'dan replied lightly. "But I won't argue with your first conclusion..."
"I think it best that I don't risk it," Karaleigh said as she patted his shoulder indulgently, "but I do find the offer as irresistable as ever."
O'dan rolled his eyes at her. "How nice of you to soothe my battered pride."
"Yes, it is rather," she replied with a snobbish sniff.
Waving his hand towards the curtain, O'dan made a face at her. "Out of here, woman! I'll be in tears before you're done with me!"
"Well, yes, that is the general idea." Karaleigh said as she stood. "But you are right, I should go. I am taking away from your time with women you actually have a shot with."
"You're a cruel tease," he replied with a lusty sigh. "Go on... run away while you still have a chance, Karaleigh. Eventually I'll be out of this bed and chasing you again!"
"Thanks for the headstart," she said as she gave his hand a parting squeeze.
