Still unbelieving about her good fortune making what she hoped was a
new friend, Dysali smiled as she dressed for dinner with Pierka. She
had decided on comfortable clothes, loose and flowing. She thought
they might be chatting for a while.
If she remembered how!
}:it will be good. it is not good that you talk to no others but me. :{
Lillyth sent a little reminder causing her rider to smile.
She shook her head a little and tried to remember when she used to
have friends... friend like I'lan, D'cal. They used to spend alot
of time together talking. Surely she would remember how.... right?
**When you are finished reminding me that I have no friends, please
contact Liddith and tell her we are ready to come over.**
She had brought a few treats up from the kitchens earlier, treats she
had herself made. She still cooked sometimes, when she had time.
And she had had more of that than she had wanted lately. Though,
even with that, it was still far less than she used to spend in the
kitchens. She would bring these to share, since she knew wine was out
of the question.
When Liddith announced her incoming visitor Pierka smiled. **Tell them
they're welcome and to come in when they get here."
She'd already set the table and she didn't expect Z'ku for hours. He
usually had other entertainments in the early evening so she knew
she'd have a nice long time to visit with her new friend. She felt
good about the prospect of a female friend that had so much in common
with her. They would have lots to talk about.
"Hey," she said and turned with a smile when she heard the door open.
"Hi Pierka!" Dysali smiled in hello and stepped into the weyr. Her
smile widened when she saw the table set, and she wandered to the
table to set her basket of treats down. "I brought us some special
treats. I made them myself." She was proud; she had not been
spending as much time as she used to in the kitchens. "When I was
little, I started hanging around the kitchens so much that the
Headwoman put me to work learning to bake. Just enough to keep me
busy... " A fond memory stole across her face at that and she shook
her head. "When I came to the Weyr, she always told me to become a
baker. " She rolled her eyes and shook her auburn curls. "As if there
is time for that!"
"Oh," Pierka sighed appreciatively as she peeked into the basket.
"Those look yummy," She so wanted to grab one of the pastries but she
knew she needed her dinner first. "You made them yourself? Thats
pretty amazing," she said with sincere admiration. She unconsciously
rubbed her belly where the baby was pushing on her.
"Yes, since my parents died, I started learning to cook... just
something to keep my hands busy. Its relaxing. And yummy!" Dysali
stepped close to peer at the belly. "Baby moving around hmm?" She
grinned and tilted her head sideways. "Does it hurt? I mean, when the
baby moves? Can I feel? How many people just touch your belly now,
though?"
Pierka chuckled. She was really enjoying Dysali. It was nice to find
someone with similar life experience, someone she could really
understand. Beyond that, they were fairly similar in age. "Oh sure,"
she said reaching for Dysali's hand and placing it on her side where
she could feel the babys foot. "I get more excitement from the
dolphins, but yes, Everyone seems to think it's fine just to reach out
and touch."
Dysali's eyes grew round as she felt the baby's foot. "Shards!! So
small!" Stunned, a little, she continued feeling for a moment then
took her hand away, grinning. "Thats growing inside of you!" Well,
she was kind of young, even for a dragonrider. "Thats so amazing,
Pierka!"
She stood there gazing for another moment, then rolled her eyes at the
rest of her comment.
"I cannot imagine what it is about being pregnant that all of a sudden
means everyone can just touch you. I see it happening alot with other
pregnant greenriders. Maybe thats why I haven't had a baby yet."
She winked. "I bet the dolphins are very excited. There are such
engaging creatures. I love to swim with them, even still. And,
Lillyth does too. She says they are fun to play with." she shook
her head at the general silliness of dragons.
"What does Liddith think of you having a baby? She must be interested
too!" She was, sort of, remembering how to talk to people. It was
hard, though, and she felt as if she were exercising long unused
muscles. Sore, but it felt good. Pierka made her smile, and she had
used to love to smile.
"Oh she is but I've had to explain it multiple times because she
forgets. The dolphins remember though and have a party whenever I get
in the water." she smiled. "I'll have to take the baby to see them
after it's born."
Dysali laughed at that, and nodded in full agreement. "Lillyth
forgets everything except that she is perfect." She shook her head
fondly. "I wish she would forget that too!" Her smile continued as
she imagined dolphin parties.
"What about the father? He's involved or not?" For Dysali, this was
the thing that she thought about more than anything. Would any
father of a child of hers be involved in the baby's life? Would _she_
want to be? Many days, she had her hands full with Thread and
Lillyth and Wags.
She had found a seat at the table by now and was nibbling thoughtfully
on some of the dinner. "I spent the first 7 turns of my life with
two parents who loved me without conditions. I would want a child of
mine to have that same kind of experience, and that is practically
impossible for a rider. I mean.. we can love them ... but can we
_love_ them?" She was curious, nothing more, but it was the first
time she'd talked to another woman about having children.
Their conversation ranged through so many topics that night that later
Pierka couldn't really remember it all. But she knew she'd finally
found a kindred spirit. Dysali was someone who understood and accepted
her and she understood the other greenrider almost as if they'd known
each other their whole lives. It was a novel experience for Pierka.
