What Does It Look Like?

Writers: Eimi, Elaine
Date Posted: 30th January 2006

Characters: D'cal, Kwiksol
Description: D'cal and Kwiksol talk while whittling one night
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 2 of Turn 3

The day's sunlight hadn't quite begun to fade when Kwiksol finally found a good spot on the beachy sands. He took out some of the scrap pieces of wood and his knife. Slowly he began scrapping the wood, trying to find the image incased within its grains.

D'cal flopped down in the sand next to his friend, his own knife and piece of drift wood in his hands. "Beautiful evening, isn't it!"

"Yes it is. The view here is quite calming," he said pausing in his whittling. "You working on anything particular there?"

"A dolphin," D'cal grinned. He wanted to give it to Zanie since she seemed to like his carings so much.

"Ahhh, very nice," Kwiksol said smiling. He was well aware the dolphineer's hall was not that far. "I haven't quite figured out what to work on next, I think I'm just enjoying the rhythm of shaving the wood, and _not_ fashioning an instrument."

D'cal nodded as he gently blew shavings from the back of his hands. "I suppose it is a bit freeing when its something undefined and not limited by design."

"I usually include interesting decorative pieces to my work, but, I haven't had time lately with the replacement going on. Yes, it is _quite_ freeing to do something a little different with my hands," he turned to the weyrling with a smile. "Change is as good as a break, yes?"

"That it is. Change... Usually is a good thing." D'cal knew they both had seen the destructive power of change as well. "Well, it seems you have all settled into the Weyr nicely."

"Yes, I'd like to think so," he admitted to himself some more then others. "The Apprentices are a little confused a bit still I think.
And some of the older Journeymen with wives are _not_ entirely pleased..."

"I can imagine," D'cal smiled. "I wonder how the wives feel about it."

"I'm not exactly sure," he said, then leaned in, whispering. "See, I've more adjusted, so I'm part of the enemy." He gave D'cal a wink.

"The enemy? Truly?" He could understand how the harpers would not trust the Weyrfolk, but he was surprised that they could doubt one of their own. "Have you been playing with wives as well?"

"Oh, I'm exagerating D'cal!" Kwiksol said, his hand slapping the thought away. "I would not touch someones wife, or any women in a monogomous relationship with another man." He couldn't help a smirk, "I just, enjoy myself a bit much."

"Well, iots refreshing to find someone who at least appreciates the sanctity of a monogomous relationship. Too many people here just don't understand them."

Kwiksol laughed. "Oh, I'm sorry D'cal. Its just, isn't it supposed to be the reverse? I'm suposed to be the hidebound crafter and your foot lose free and fancy ways are supposed to scare me," he made motions to emphasize his points.

"It's not like I was _born_ here, you know," the bluerider said defensively. "It takes time to adjust to a new place. Some people just adjust faster than others." And D'cal sure wished he knew why he couldn't be one of those 'others'.

"I'm I'm sorry D'cal, I'll be quiet," Kwiksol said quickly. "I didn't mean to cause offense." He was suprised, it was only suposed to be a joke.

"Oh there's no offense," D'cal said finally. "It's just a sore subject I'd rather not talk about."

"Not to pry D'cal, but its usually the sorest subjects that need the most talking?" Kwiksol said, but looking forward, not meeting d'cal's eye. "Just some general advice, I'm sure you have someone better to be discussing sore subjects with."

D'cal shrugged. "It's complicated, Kwiksol. And I just want to move on."

"I'm sorry," Kiwksol said, then abruptly changed the subject. "So what do you think this looks like?" Kwiksol said, showing his whittling progress.

His friend studied it a moment before his face cracked into a smile.
"It looks like a shaved stick."

"Tsk Tsk Tsk, no imagination rider?" Kwiksol said, trying to convince d'cal he was missing something, but in reality he hadn't.

"No _talent_, Harper?" D'cal asked with a teasing nudge.

"Give me a few more minutes, and I'll show you _talent_ rider," he said, smiling as he realized what he was making. It took a bit to work out the inside, but eventually he had a very crude pipe. "I don't know if its a good thing, I was unknowingly making one of these," he said, twirling it about before giving it a blow or too. **Very crude** he thought, the tone quite off but sound was being produced.

"You just can't get away from it, can you," D'cal laughed. "I guess not," Kwiksol smiled bemusedly, playing short bits of melodies.
