K'deren

K'deren

Once N'klos had left his office, T'moran immediately asked Haldarth if he could summon K'deren. He was well pleased at gaining a good Wingleader for Dolphin Cove - they were surely in need of one - but the brownrider was an excellent Wingsecond and it would be rather tactless to let him find out about the new situation in the ranks from gossip.

Donneth passed on the message as soon as he could, which speedily led to K'deren turning up at T'moran's office door. "You wanted to speak to me?" he said after knocking on the door.

"I did. Thank you for coming so quickly - please sit down." T'moran felt slightly guilty about what he was about to do, which made little sense. K'deren had done well in his role as acting Wingleader, but he could not have a brownrider occupying the spot meant for a bronzerider.

"I wanted you to be the first to know," he began. No doubt it was best to simply state the facts. "I've just been speaking to N'klos, Xanath's rider, who you no doubt remember. He had agreed to return to Dolphin Cove Weyr and take over the leadership of Hurricane Wing."

It was perhaps a little sooner than K'deren had expected, but he knew that it would happen. He nodded, "I understand, N'klos knows the riders and no doubt they will be relieved to have a familiar face in charge."

T'moran was relieved he'd taken it so well. "In addition, I asked N'klos if he would mind transferring you back to Cyclone Wing, to be my Wingsecond. I think the two of us work well together and it would be helpful, seeing as Cyclone is so depleted, to at least have a leadership that has worked together before. However, if you prefer to stay in Hurricane, I'll understand."

That was the unexpected bit. A Wingleader had the right to choose his 'second. That was a tradition carried through for as long as the Weyrs could remember. No doubt N'klos would want to choose his own second anyway...Vonalie had been so proud of him the day he accepted the position as a Wingsecond in the first place, she would want him to keep that rank. "I, I think I'd like that."

"Good." The Weyrleader smiled. "I'm glad you've agreed to that - though I can't promise it'll be easy." Then again, people did say that hard work could take a man's mind off his losses, and T'moran had found that to be very much the case lately. "We can start at once. We've got a lot of riders from Dragonsfall and River Bluff who are here temporarily, and I still wouldn't say we're really flying as a Wing - as one together. So there'll be extra drills, and I'll need your ideas on new formations we could try and riders from other Weyrs we might approach for permanent transfers."

K'deren nodded. It was good to feel needed for once. "I'll get right on it, after I've prepared a hand over for N'klos."

"Ah, I see. Well, no doubt you'll want to share the news with your wingmates," T'moran said. "Your new work can wait until tomorrow morning to begin, but I'll expect you to have looked over the wing roster by then and familiarised yourself with our new riders." He handed over a sheaf of papers. "It's good to be flying with you again, K'deren. Cyclone Wing was hard hit in Fall, and it needs some steady and dependable riders if we are to keep from losing anyone else."

The brownrider took the papers from the Weyrleader. "It'll be good to be back. And I don't intend to lose anyone. I won't see any more children growing up without their parents."

"A good aim for us all." Secretly, though, T'moran feared his Wingsecond would be disappointed. Even with all the generous aid the other Weyrs had offered, Cyclone Wing was still made up mainly of riders who did not know one another and were fighting in unfamiliar conditions. If they lasted out more than a few sevendays without a serious loss, he thought, he would be very surprised indeed.
