Writers: Devin, Chelle
Date Posted: 12th August 2013

Characters: Relik, Kaphrad
Description: Kaphrad discusses his ideas with Relik and they make a plan.
Location: Seacraft Hall
Date: month 2, day 17 of Turn 7

"I have some ideas for new things we could try," Kaphrad said.
"_After_ we get settled, of course, but I wanted to share them with
you."

Relik had a scrap hide nearby to scribble notes on as he let his Second
talk so he could share his thoughts when Kaphrad was finished. Nodding,
he gestured for the other man to continue, curious about what he had been
working on.

Might as well start big. "For a while now I've been interested
in trying to build steam powered ships. Similar to the riverboats,
but with enough power to work on the sea."

That made Relik's eyes go a bit wider but he didn't dismiss the idea.
"Aye, and do you have some sort of drawings or..." He wanted something
to look at, to put his head around.

"Yes." Kaphrad lifted them from a pile on his desk and set it in
front of the Hallmaster. "The first attempts will be on a smaller scale,
to use less material. It will take some trial and error."

"So..it wouldn't be entirely dependent on the steam. Rather....as a second
method in the case of no wind?" Now that was an idea. Rubbing his chin,
he looked over everything, encouraging Kaphrad to keep speaking.

"Well, yes. And it can also help with maneuverability in difficult
situations as one could simply steer with the rudder while the engine
drives it forward." Kaphrad had known he needed logical reasons to get
the Hallmaster to agree to try it, but for himself he was happy just
seeing if the idea would work.

"Have you tried a small version of this? Like a toy for instance?" Relik
knew it was sometimes harder to do scale versions of things, especially
when parts had to be smaller, but he knew it would be easier in this case.
"Of course we'd have to speak with the smiths to make the engine.."

"Not yet, but I'll begin work as soon as I have your permission to use materials."
Kaphrad would rather get permission first instead of risking upsetting his new
Hallmaster. "And I know a few smiths that would be happy to help me
out with this."

"What do you need and what do we have?" was Relik's next question
as he tried to take inventory of the situation.

"We need wood, metal, and coal. We have, or will have, enough wood and
possibly enough metal. I'll have to see after the major part of the
construction is finished."

"Coal....That will take some time, but I can manage. Just let me know
how much. Requisition extra since much experimenting will have to
happen and it does take time to get." They didn't have the developed coal
trains in the south like they had in the north going out from Crom. One of
those things the smiths needed to get on top of, but Relik wouldn't
tell them their business.

Kaphrad nodded. "As I said, we can worry about all this after we're
more settled." Much as he wanted to start, the needs of the Hall
had to come first.

"Mmm but it might be good to give our men something to do. There's not
much they can help with construction wise beyond the docks, slips, and such."
Relik knew that the sooner they could be crafting in some way, the better.

"I'd be happy to start earlier, Hallmaster," Kaphrad said with a smile.
