Taking the Ropes

Writers: Devin, Chelle
Date Posted: 22nd July 2013

Characters: Relik, Kaphrad
Description: Relik tells Kaphrad that he plans to go to visit another Master.
Location: Seacraft Hall
Date: month 2, day 20 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Famell

Relik poked his head into Kaphrad's office checking to see his Second
wasn't busy. "So I plan on making a quick trip to the dolphin hall to speak with
their Master. You'll be in charge here of course."

Kaphrad looked up and bit back a chuckle. Relik was so brisk. "How
long do you expect to be gone?"

"Well the journey down there and then a few days to speak to the man
and work out things and then the way back. Probably about five days
or so give or take, depending on weather." Relik hadn't checked the
forecasts such as they were, based on the turn before yet.

"All right." Kaphrad nodded. "I'm sure I can handle things for that
long."

"You'll be fine. If you need anything, send a message." Relik
shook his head and then handed over a list. "This should be done by the time
I get back, though, I think."

"Of course." The corner of his mouth turned up. "Don't worry,
Hallmaster. I know how to run a construction project. This isn't the
same as building a ship, the principle is similar."

"It's not us...." Relik dropped that subject since so far the Holders had kept
to the timetable so he didn't complain.

"Well I hope you have a pleasant trip and a good meeting."

"Aye me too. If you do need to get ahold of me, use the drums or send by one of
the packet ships." He slipped Kaphrad a copy of his itinerary so the man would
know which port they were to be stopped in and when.

Kaphrad skimmed it and nodded.

"Oh that reminds me. How are we doing on plans for threadfall?" Relik
didn't know if they had equipment yet for a proper groundcrew or who was
doing what and how many they had.

"We're not there yet. We can't field a proper ground crew since we
only have a few working tanks. The Hold is already aware and we can
ask them to let the Weyr know. It might be a few more 'Falls before we
can do our duty." Kaphrad felt uncomfortable about that, but the Hall
was just being built. No one could really expect them to be ready so
soon.

"Aye we'll definitely need to tell the Weyr. Might be the crew from Avian
Point could come down and cover us till we get things situated. Did the order
for tanks go to the smiths? Did they say how long it would be exactly?" Relik
hoped they knew it was a priority.

"Yes, we sent the order. They didn't say when they could complete it,
but they will send a few at a time as they finish them," Kaphrad said.

"The permanent moorings should be ready as soon as possible. That'll
make things easier. It was a priority. They tell me that the Southern Star
will be docking here from now on. She's ours." Relik had a certain prideful
note in his voice at that. She was a fine ship after all.

"Wonderful. She's lovely and strong and I'm glad to have her." And
Kaphrad couldn't wait to start building new ones.

"Aye and...I'm anxious to speak with you about your ideas Kaphrad, when
I get back. Do you have the plans and everything ready to look over?" Of
course as soon as they had the resources, Relik wanted to begin that
aspect of work. That was part of the core of seacrafting.

"I have _lots_ of ideas, sir. I have some plans ready and I'll likely
have a few more by the time you get back." He knew Relik was
hidebound, but maybe he'd be willing to listen to a few _new_ ideas.

"Allright then, keep up the good work." And with that, he headed out since
he still needed to pack and get everything organized with everyone else.
