Instead of sitting behind his desk, the Master was on the pier, sitting
on a bench, sipping his morning klah. The weather was good and he liked
the fresh air and the smell of the ocean nearby. He waited for Kaphrad to
join him.
"Good morning, Master Relik," Kaphrad said as he stepped up beside him.
"Ah there you are you. Have a seat then." He gestured to the empty spot on
the bench, remaining seated himself. "I'd like to speak to you about some of
my observations I made while visiting the Hold now that I have time to speak
with you alone."
Kaphrad sat and arched an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"Aye. So Lord Morin says he needs a Hall because he wants his Hold to
be recognized as a major Hold with all the bells. It's a pride thing for him. As
such, he seems not to want to bother or ask much of us, which is good. Our operation will be
separate from the Hold's, both by distance and personnel. However, I anticipate many of our
crafters ending up there or many of their folk coming to us for formal training." Relik didn't
know this for sure, but it made logical sense.
"So we'll have a certain amount of independence, but close ties?"
"All of our autonomy and I think much independence yes. But over the turns,
the relationships will grow amongst the folk. I'm more interested in making
overtures to the man at Citrus Bay Seahold. We will probably have day-to-day
interactions with them." Indeed, the place where the Hall was made it quite
convenient.
Kaphrad raised a brow. "To make sure he sees us as a benefit and not a
nuisance?"
"Indeed and to learn what resources they may have that we could trade for."
Scratching his chin, he took another drink of the klah. "Besides, until time goes
by, that'll be where the crafters are if we need them like healers and such."
"Ah, yes." Kaphrad nodded. "This is more in Aini's realm, but maybe we
should have a few meals with them? A few of our people going over to
the Hold a time or two, and inviting the Holder and his people to come
here? It would be a chance to interact on friendly terms and we'll get
to know each other."
"I don't think they'll take the boat ride here, Kaphrad. But when we move over
we can certainly go over there to eat I think if they're amenable." Relik knew
that he had to foster relations if he was going to learn the area and
it peculiarities.
"Anything else on your mind?" Kaphrad asked.
"The women and children will be left behind here until we have proper quarters
and everything setup. I know people know this, but I'm hoping it won't greatly
effect anything." Relik knew seacrafters were used to not having their spouses
around them when at sea.
Kaphrad had been mostly land-bound for many turns, except for
occasional trips. He would miss his wife's company, but the work would
keep him busy enough. "Aye, and it will be an excuse for a celebration
when they do come over."
"And save us the problems when they don't have comforts for some months,"
Relik agreed sagely, looking down into his empty klah mug.
Kaphrad chuckled. "That, too."
"Well it seems it's time to go find some charts of the coast where
we're going to be. I need to study up on the area till I know it better than Morin.
Been some time since I've sailed those waters of course." Relik got himself up and
swung the empty mug as he did so.
"I'd like to have a look at them, too. It's wise to get familiar with
our new home." It would be such a change, moving across the sea,
becoming a Hallsecond at a new hall. Kaphrad hoped he wouldn't regret
his decision.
