The hatching had gone well. By the time Oria had finished with her duties
and taken her seat, proceeding were well underway, and she was able to see
Lecordin with a look of awe and amazement on his face leaving the sands with
a bronze hatchling by his side. **I knew he'd do it,** she told Degrorth, **
You find the best candidates here.**
}:His bronze will be big and strong,:{ Degrorth assured her. }:And maybe one
day he will fly me well, just like..:{
**You can't say that now,** a hint of amusement came through in her mental
words. **That bronze is far too young!**
When the hatching had finished, she was sure she'd heard someone behind her
say something about Lord Corowal. "Did I hear you right?" she asked. "Is
that what he said?" The Journeyman Healer nodded. "So they say. In front of
everyone, he just shouted it out as loud as he could."
Time passed, and the feast had begun, and the new weyrlings began to make an
appearance. Oria was looking for one in particular, and when he appeared,
she went to him. "Congratulations!"
L'cor hadn't been able to stop smiling since Tonuth found him on the
hatching sands. Everything around him was still a blur and colored
with the rosy glow of his Impression high. There were so many who just
wanted to shake his hand from the moment he'd walked into the room. It
was beginning to get sore and he open and closed it at his side. He
was looking for his mother or father when he heard the voice and
turned.
"Oria," if it were possible his smile would have gotten wider. "Thank
you! And please thank Degrorth." He found himself at a loss for the
proper words and just shook his head. "Thank you!"
"I will," she said leaning forward to give him a brief peck on the cheek,
all the contact a new weyrling would be allowed for months. She smiled,
"He's a good looking bronze from what I saw. I'd love to meet him some
time."
He wanted to reach for her, to pull her into his arms. But he squashed
that down. She'd warned him and they'd mentioned this time as critical
for the dragonets. "I'd love for you to meet Tonuth," his eyes glowed
back at her. Mentally reaching out he could feel the little bronze
still sound asleep with Cayleryth. "He's sleeping at the moment
though."
"Well when he's awake," she said. "And when you're awake, these first few
days, some things will blur after a while." Keeping her tone light. "I heard
something, and I, I thought you should know people are talking about it, and
this is something you might want to know."
Looking the new bronzerider in the eye she said, "Is it true about Lord
Corowal?"
His eyes slid off of hers with a little embarrassment. "It is," he
said softly. "But it wasn't something I could tell without his
permission. I hope you understand."
"I think so," she said softly after a moment. "You wouldn't want special
treatment, or people thinking you could get them special things, because of
who your father is. Right?"
"That's part of it," he nodded."But, while my father came to visit at
times, it was always secret. _I_ was a secret until he just
acknowledged me." He stepped closer to her. "You should have heard the
Weyrleader earlier." He shook his head. He hadn't wanted this to be a
surprise to her most of all. But he knew he couldn't reach out right
now, not the way he wanted. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be, at least you have a father who cares." Her father had largely
ignored her after her mother died. "I told you about my parents."
"Yes, you did." He felt himself very lucky to have a mother who'd
always been there for him and a pair of grandparents who'd help to
teach him a good work ethic. Her story had been far different.
"And now you have Tonuth too."
"I do," he said with a glowing smile. He reached out to his sleeping
lifemate just to feel that wonderful connection again. He refocused
quickly on Oria. "Can we dance?"
"I'd like that," she said. "I don't think the weyrling staff would object to
that tonight."
"Well then," he said putting on his best Steward's airs. "May I have
this dance?"
"You may indeed, bronzerider."
