Description: Asley sees Kwiksol and shares some of her concerns.
Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 12, day 4 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Thanja
It had been a few days since she had first arrived and Asley could
now
find her way around the Hall for the most part. The printer was in the
minority, for sure, being
female-but also being a printer. Keeping to
herself and her other colleagues, she kept quiet as she tried to
decide if
she had made the right decision. Sitting down at one of the trestle tables to
eat her lunch, she saw a
face she recognized.
"Well hello Asley,"
smiled Kwiksol from down the table a ways. He slid
his tray down closer and
was soon seated across from her.. "Are the
printers finally moved
over?"
"Mmmm aye." She pushed her food around a bit and then looked back
at
him. "And here I am, back at a Hold."
"But at the Hall within the
Hold." He knew his own view was vastly
different from hers. "Surely that
makes a difference?"
"It is when I'm within the hall's walls. As soon as
I go outside of them, I'm
nothing. When I got here, the guard took me to the
drudge's quarters, Kwiksol.
I should have known better." That nasty old
grouch.
"Have you spoken with Thanja about it?" He figured the old
Master
would have some insight for Asley for dealing with the holders.
After
all she'd been managing it for Turns before either of them were
born.
"I haven't seen Master just yet. Still trying to get my things
organized,
then get my new knots...Then I'll have to see her to get my
schedule."
She mused over that. It would be good to see her
again.
"Well, you should," he nodded his point. "She'll go rip some lips
off
of those guards and you know it." He couldn't imagine any of the
hold
busy bodies standing up to the old Master Printer.
"I don't know
Kwik. She's still a woman and that means they hate her.
Last time, they
burned us up. I don't want to put her in danger." She messed
with her food a
little bit more before swallowing some.
Well then, he was going to do
some checking quietly on his own and if
it was necessary, he'd go and visit
with the Steward's office. He was
pretty certain the Lord Holder wouldn't
want all these fine new
buildings burned down again.
"We'll make sure
you're safe as long as you're in the Hall." He
scooped some more tubers into
his mouth.
"Hmm so I guess most everyone's back here then?" She tried to
change
the subject so she could eat at least. It was hard to think of burning
alive.
He smiled. It had been lonely almost as though he was the only
one
around the half completed Hall when he'd first arrived. "I think
so,"
he said. "Want a bubbly? I think they just brought some fresh
ones
out."
"MM sure," she answered absentmindedly as she watched some
of the other
folks around. Asley wondered if she could get used to this
again-being
in a proper hall.
"Okay," he said and pushed his chair
back with his knees. The bubblies
were indeed hot and he popped two onto a
plate to bring them back. "I
think they're berry."
"Thanks," she said
as she bit into one. At least the food was good. She
wouldn't
starve.
