Jeyme

Jeyme

Jeyme was bored, plain and simple. If only she could get married she
supposed she'd at least have something to occupy her time. As it was,
the sky had opened up and it was pouring outdoors, which had stunned
the residents of Emerald Falls since it had seemed like the beginning
to a brilliantly sunny day. Chin in hand, Jeyme was near her small,
rectangular window, watching the rain fall.

Shaking herself from her melancholy mood, Jeyme decided that she
needed to get out and be social, with someone, anyone! Standing and
straightening the dark burgundy skirt that she wore, Jeyme glanced in
the mirror to make sure that her white blouse still looked pristine,
and then headed out of her rooms.

Following the paths to the kitchens on a whim, Jeyme was pleased to
find Nikhan working, "Hello, Nikhan." She greeted the baker, having
spoken to him on previous occasions.

He was deeply engrossed in his new creation and didn't see her coming
until she spoke. Once his concentration was broken, he was quick to
respond to the pretty young lady.

"Just the person I was hoping to see!" he smiled warmly, "I need an
opinion on my new creation. It's a sweet pastry with berry flavoured
cream and berry paste." he was very happy with the way it looked, but
tasting it would be the test!

Jeyme smiled at the man's cheerful nature and the delicious smell
coming from his creations was testament to his skill, "Well I would be
more than happy to be your taste tester!"

"Excellent!" That was just the response he'd been hoping for. He
grabbed two plates from a nearby shelf and placed them on the bench
near the pastries. One pastry went onto each plate. He spooned a
dollop of berry cream onto each and a swish of berry paste on the
side. He nodded toward a small table to the side. "Please sit and
allow me to serve you, my dear." he smiled.

The woman smiled as she gathered her skirts in one hand, swept them
out of the way and took the offered seat at the small table. Jeyme
wished that everyone in the Hold was as friendly as the baker. It
wasn't too often that Jeyme allowed herself to have baked treats,
because she had to keep an eye on her figure, but today, she told
herself, would be an exception.

"Thank you Nikhan." Jeyme said even as her lips arched up into a
slightly crooked grin.

He placed a plate in front of her and one in front of the other seat,
then gave a bow, cheeky grin hidden as he ducked his face. He
straightened. "You're welcome m'lady," he said grandly. "I'll get us
some spoons. Or would you prefer a fork?" of course, fingers was
another option and one he'd have used if not in the company of a
pretty young lady.

With a wink to Nikhan, Jeyme picked up the pastry between her thumb
and forefinger and bit into the delicious creation. Yes, it was just
as it had looked on the plate. The crust was expertly flaky and the
inside was filled with a gooey fruity treat, "No forks required,
Nikhan, this is amazing!"

He grinned. "Thank you, I aim to please." He bit into his, berry
filling spilling out over his fingers. Hating to waste any, he put his
fingertips to his mouth and quickly sucked them clean.

"I wish I could make something as delectable as this!" Jeyme admitted
as she finished the pastry in two quick bites. The woman envied anyone
with a craft. A craft gave one a sense of purpose, as well as a
talent. What talent did Jeyme have besides knowing the proper ways to
sit, stand, walk, chew, and sip tea?

"I wish I could teach you," he said looking regretful. "Although, some
things I could, if you want to learn." A good wife should learn the
basics. Some man would thank him some day.

Jeyme really perked up at the sound of that, "You would? That would be
wonderful!" The woman didn't really care what she learned, just the
thought of adding to her skill set was enough to enthuse her.

"Why not. You have more enthusiasm than some of the apprentices I've
had," he shook his head but was smiling. "When do you want to start?"

"Whenever you have free time, I don't want to take you away from your
work." Jeyme didn't want Nikhan to get in trouble with his superiors,
and since she had a rather free schedule.

"I start early," very early, "so I finish early," he replied. "I have
time now actually, if you're not supposed to be somewhere else?"

Jeyme shook her head, "I don't have any other engagements." A smile
was curving across the woman's face as she eagerly anticipated her
'lesson' with Nikhan.

"Good," he finished his last bite and rose to his feet. "Do you know
how to make bread?"

Standing as well, Jeyme shook her head with a happy smile, "No." **And
I can't wait to learn.** She thought as she rolled her sleeves up to
her elbows.
