Description: E'ril finally speaks with the Weyrleader about a promotion
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 1 of Turn 6
After much thought and deliberation with himself and Dawenth, not to
mention the constant
hint dropping from Sh'del, E'ril finally found himself in the
Weyrleader's office. The time
had come to consider moving up the ranks and now seemed like the
perfect time as another
clutch hardened on the sands. E'ril sipped on his mug of klah
patiently while he waited for
N'vanik to finish up what he was doing.
N'vanik scrawled a few more words and added the hide to a pile. "So
E'ril, what's on your mind?"
"I just wanted to come and speak with about taking on the Weyrlingmaster
Third's responsibilities. The idea has been on my mind as of late and
Dawenth and I both agree that we are well suited for the task," E'ril
explained plainly. The request was simple enough really. It was nothing
political or personal against G'len, E'ril just thought it was time to
make things official as he had been taking on some of the Third's
responsibilities as of late.
N'vanik looked at him with a hint of a smile. "I was hoping you'd get
around to asking me sooner rather than later." G'len's personal issues
had gone on too long and they needed someone that could focus on the
Weyrlings.
"Well, certain people haven't let me forget as of late. With this class
almost through and another on the way, it seemed like the best time to
discuss it. So, it's your decision of course. Thoughts?" He didn't want
to see as though he was leading the Weyrleader. He knew N'vanik to be a
fair minded man who cared most about the well being of his Weyr.
"I think you'll do a fine job." The Weyrleader's smile widened.
The bluerider relaxed a bit. He hadn't been worried about what N'vanik
would say but it was always nice to receive praise. "Thank you, sir. You
know we won't let you down. Sh'del will be pleased because now he can
_really_ drop some hides in my lap." E'ril chuckled.
N'vanik laughed too. "He'll appreciate the help, I know. And I
appreciate it too. I'm trying to get the Weyrlingstaff back on track."
"We're definitely headed that way. Every clutch on the sands means a fresh
start. Just a perk of the job I guess. Same lessons, always different
experiences."
This fact was something E'ril did enjoy about this job. The new faces
always made
things interesting.
"Good, because you're about to get thirty-two new wide eyed weyrlings
dumped on you." And they still had the last group. Next month N'vanik
would have to spend some time watching them drill so he could pick out
which pairs he wanted for his Wing.
"All in good time. I've heard much about this new clutch and they aren't
even hatched yet. The class we have at the moment is proving challenge
enough. One weyrling at a time, we'll make it through." A few faces of the
weyrlings flashed in his mind, especially those of a few who need to be held
back either because of age or ability. He hoped that after the Blooding there
would not be any fewer pairs to offer the fighting wings.
The Weyrleader nodded. "We'll make it through, and we'll get stronger.
Just like we have been." It hadn't been easy having so few riders, but
now the hard work was paying off. They were almost up to regular
strength.
"Of course, of course. I never lost hope. The queens always do what's best
for the Weyr," E'ril commented. Frequent hatchings certainly kept him and the
rest of the staff busy but he didn't favor the thought of having
thinned out Wings.
Thinking of his coworkers reminded him of something. "I know you and
Sh'del are close
but I think it's important for you to hear good things from someone
else. He really
does break his back for the Weyrlings. Even if joining the
Weyrlingstaff wasn't his
first choice, he's certainly done a lot with the position."
"He said some similar things about you." N'vanik smiled. "I think the
two of you work very well together, and both of you have gone above
what's expected of your position. Which is why I'm making you 'Third.
As for Sh'del ... well, between you and me, I'm working on it. There's
some personal issues involved, so it's a little sticky."
"I see," E'ril nodded along. "I'll leave that to you and him. I'm sure
what ever happens, he won't be disappointed and it can only mean good things
for the Weyr. You won't find me complaining." He smiled and rose to
leave. "Well,I must be going. I have some little ones returning from
their baths soon."
"Don't forget these." N'vanik pulled Weyrlingmaster Third knots from
his desk and handed them to E'ril. "It might be fun to see which of
the weyrlings notices first."
Taking the knots with a smile E'ril said, "It definitely will be. Thank you,
sir." He gave a salute and made for the door.
