Devyn

Devyn

Devyn had noticed that one of the wingriders in her Wing was rather..
quiet. It intrigued the greenrider to no end since she'd never really
been able to spark up conversation with Aileyan before. Maybe the
other greenrider needed a friend, or maybe she just wanted to be alone
and would throw something at Devyn the moment she approached. Either
way, Devyn had decided that it was time to get to know her fellow
greenrider.

Tray of food in hand, Devyn meandered through the crowded lunch tables
in the Dining Cavern, her eyes focused on the empty seat beside of
Aileyan, "Hi there," she said with a smile as she reached the
greenrider and set her tray down.

"Hi," Aileyan replied. She didn't smile, but her tone was friendly.

"How are you today Aileyan?" Devyn asked in a conversational tone as
she sat down and began eating.

"Just fine. How about you?" Aileyan replied politely. She wasn't a
person to unburden just to anybody.

"Doing pretty well, thanks." Devyn placed a fork loaded with food into
her mouth, her eyes glancing casually at Aileyan, "How is your green?"

"Proddy," Aileyan replied and smiled this time. Kjarliheth was
approaching a mating flight and was making in known.

Devyn chuckled at that, and when she spoke she motioned with her fork,
"You have my empathy, if you don't like flights, and you have my
congratulations if you do." She grinned before continuing,
"Unfortunately for me, Ellyth's flight is still a couple of months
away. I try to tell her she needs to start flirting with the bronzes
_now_."

"Kjarrie doesn't need my encouragement. She seems to be collecting
bronzes," Aileyan replied.

"Lucky you," Devyn spoke with a glint of humor in her eyes, "Ellyth
spends most of her time submerged in the Weyrlake and only gets flirty
just before a flight. Not that there's anything wrong with blue or
brownriders, mind you, I'm just trying to get Ellyth to put a little
more effort into it."

"Each and every way," Aileyan said. " A nice brown would be...safe."

Devyn had to raise her eyebrow at that, her curiosity piqued, "And
what makes a brown so safe?" She questioned.

"Bronzeriders, it's like playing with fire. They either hurt you or
make you fall for them," Aileyan said.

"Really? Well," Devyn considered it for a moment, chewing thoughtfully
on her food before speaking, "I guess I can see that. Bronzeriders do
seem to be a little less stable when it comes to relationships, more
impetuous, perhaps. Brownriders do seem a more stable, reliable
choice."

"Yeah," Aileyan grunted. She knew all that and still she was involved
with a bronzerider.

Devyn got the distinct feeling that Aileyan had been burned by a
bronzerider before, and before she considered calling back the words
she found herself asking, "So, if I may ask, who's the bronzerider
currently wrecking havoc in your life?"

Aileyan stared her and wondered if it was wise to answer that
question. But then, it was hardly a secret that they spent lot of time
in each other's weyr. "U'kaiah," she replied.

"Oh," Devyn hadn't been expecting that answer. Was she really so out
of the gossip loop that she didn't know her own Wingleader's affairs?
That was appalling, this was the Weyr, where everyone knew everyone
elses business!

"Things aren't going so well?" Devyn couldn't guess what was going so
wrong to make Aileyan seem so down, after all, U'kaiah seemed like a
nice man.

"Well," Aileyan looked half-amused, half-sad, "He has another woman,
who is going to have his baby any moment now..." that just told all
there was to need about the situation.

Ouch. Devyn inwardly winced. That was a tough situation and Devyn were
sure that if she were in Aileyan's position she'd be just as
depressed, "Eh, so does he want to be with this.. other woman, or is
he just keeping her company while she's pregnant?" Sometimes becoming
a father changed men, on the other hand, some dragonriders had several
children so another to the brood was nothing new.

"Who knows," she shrugged. "Well, enough of me. How about you?
Anything going on your life, met anybody interesting?" she asked,
hoping to divert the discussion to something else.

Devyn shrugged at the question about her own life, "Nothing out of the
ordinary," she smiled a bit, "I suppose it's fortunate that I lead
such an ordinary, simple life." Stretching her hands over her head,
Devyn opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by Ellyth interrupting
into her thoughts.

"Hm, it seems Ellyth dear is ready for a bath. I'd better get out to
her then." Devyn stood with a smile for Aileyan, "It was great talking
with you. I'll see you at drills!"

"Don't let her wait. See you!" Aileyan smiled back. Their talk had
cheered her up a bit.
Nothing like girl talk to clear your head.
