Description: The Weyrleader congratulates one of the new weyrlings
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 18 of Turn 6
"Congratulations," N'vanik said as he stepped up to Pierka.
She ripped her eyes away from where her beautiful green Liddith had
her head stuck in the food pail to look up at the tall man. Her eyes
widened as she saw the knots and realized it was the Weyrleader
himself. "S-S-Sir," she stammered. "Thank you."
He smiled. "You only have to call me sir if I'm mad at you."
"Yes Sir," she said without thinking. Then she giggled, "I mean, thank
you." Her eyes went involuntarily to her new lifemate. "Slowly dear.
Remember to chew. I promise there will be more."
"Ah, yes. Feedings. I don't miss those." Loseth had always been big
and had an appetite to match.
She smiled again. Pierka hadn't done much of that in a very long time
but today was a special day and she finally knew what love was like.
Her heart was full in a way she'd never known and she was complete,
whole. "It's ok," she said. "It will be hard work, but she's worth
it."
"They're worth everything," he said, his eyes a little distant as he
sent love to Loseth.
She nodded in full agreement. She smiled up at him again, "They had
doubts about me Standing and here I was the first to impress." She
could hardly keep the joy out of her voice.
"What doubts?" he asked curiously.
"Just about my memory," she tilted her head. "But I'm fine and I told
them so." Her hand went to adjust a drooping wing and set it right on
top of Liddith's back. "I'm sure we'll be just fine."
"What about your memory?"
She knew she was tested and cleared through the Headwoman's office but
figured her reports went to the Weyrwoman, not the Weyrleader so it
probably hadn't hit his desk. Taking a deep breath she started in with
an overview of her story. "So you see... I don't have a memory of
anything before three turns ago. After the storm is crystal clear
though."
"Storm? Ah, Topaz Sea Hold." He hadn't been here at the time, but
everyone had heard of it. "Do you have any family? Anyone familiar to
fill you in on what you don't remember?"
"No," she said absently stroking her new lifemate. "As far as anyone
can tell they all must have died in the storm. I was the only one
alive in the ship they found washed ashore." She'd been answering that
question for so long that she could emotionally separate herself from
the horror of waking up with no memory or family.
"That's rough. You've got your dragon now, though. And your fellow
weyrlings, if you let them, they'll be a kind of family too." N'vanik
wished he'd been more open to friendship during his own weyrlinghood.
She turned hopeful eyes up at him. He had to know, he was the
Weyrleader and if anyone would know he would. "Do you really think
so?"
"Yeah. You'll be living and working together for months. You'll grow
close." Even N'vanik had managed to make a friend during training.
Suddenly she wanted to hug him for some reason but she stiffened and
kept herself where she was. "Thank you sir," she said with shining
eyes. "Today is the best day of my life" she said }:Mine too:{ said
Liddith and Pierka burst into giggles. "It's the only day you've had
so far silly." }:Yes! but there is _food_, and you mine. Today I
found you. It is the best day that will ever be.:{ For some strange
reason Pierka got a big lump in her throat and had to swallow several
times.
"Um, thank you again," she said to the big Weyrleader.
He loved seeing that look on a young rider's face, the realization
that came over and over again, that a dragon loved them and they would
never be alone again. "You're welcome. Take good care of her."
"I promise I will," she whispered and she meant it with everything within her.
