T'nom

T'nom

Pain.  It was annoying.  Okay, it was more than annoying it was...it
was...it HURT.  Meledei sighed and shifted a little, then immediately
regretted it.  Her hip and leg burned and made tears sting her eyes.
Shaffit.  Why did she have to get hit?  She should have been more careful.
Or something.  She reached up and wiped those tears away.  She didn't
actually cry, but the wetness seemed to spring up now and again, not sending
her into sobs but spurring her eyes into action regardless.  She sighed
again, wishing she could lie in a different position, but she was stuck.
Her left hip ached in protest at being forced to stay in one position so
long, but any attempts to shift were met with more pain that only numbweed
could help and even then, there were little twinges it couldn't quite reach.

Tanom had heard the news and instantly felt a sense of panic for his friend.
He'd hated having to wait, but between the healers and the Weyrleader and
Weyrwoman, he wasn't allowed to see Meledei straight away. After having
paced the infirmary waiting room for some time, one of the healers finally
came out and told him he could go and see her. Tanom hurried in the
direction he'd been sent.

As he moved behind the divider screen, his eyes fell on his best friend.
"Meledei," he said as he moved to her side, concern clearly evident on his
features. "I'm here. They wouldn't let me in right away." He immediately
knelt down beside her bed. "Are you okay?" He asked quietly as he gazed into
her eyes. "I was very worried."

Meledei opened her eyes and immediately her face cracked into a smile.  She
had to admit she was glad that this time the person coming to see her wasn't
a healer or something.  It was nice to see a friendly face.  "Hey Tanom."
She greeted fairly cheerfully considering everything.  After all, she'd
just gotten scored.  "I'm going to be scarred, but evidently I'll be able to
walk normally and all that.  It looks worse than it is."  The scars didn't
bother her.  Meledei knew it was a part of being a dragonrider - it just
hurt so sharding much.  "How are you?"

"A lot better than you," he replied with a half smile as he sat in one of
the chairs by her bed. "So, what happened, Meledei? I mean, I know people
get scored all the time, but I never expected it to be you." He could still
feel the utter dread that had settled in on him when he'd heard the news but
hadn't known the extent of her condition.

"I never expected it.  At least, not this time."  Meledei figured it
would happen sooner or later, but she hadn't thought it would be
_then_.  "It came from behind.  I'm not sure how, it just caught me.
Elleth tried to swerve.  I think she kept it from getting straight
onto my back at least."  That might have resulted in a worse injury!

He glanced to her side, wondering just how severe the injury really
was. "I'm just glad you're okay," he said quietly. "I don't know what
I'd do if something...." he paused and looked away for a moment before
turning back to her, "You're my closest friend, Meledei. And you know
me, friends aren't exactly something I have in abundance." He gave her
a crooked smile at that thought. "Did they say how long you'd be
here?"

Meledei reached out and her fingers curled over Tanom's, holding
tight.  "You're one of my closest friends, too."  Meledei had a lot of
friends, but there were some that she held closer to her heart than
anothers, like Z'ku and Cosani - and Tanom.  "Thank you for thinking
of me."  She half whispered, then smiled a little.  "Til I can walk on
crutches and the liklihood of getting an infection is lowered.
Probably a sevenday.  Maybe more.  I think it depends on how I
progress."

Tanom frowned. Clearly her injuries were severe. "Hmm, well that won't
do. You'll be bored out of your mind in that amount of time. I guess
that just means I'll have to spend all my extra time here with you!"
He grinned, "though that means your special order just might not get
finished in time." He was teasing her. It was actually nearly done as
he'd spent as much time as he could spare on it. Perhaps it could be a
gift for when she was well enough to return to her weyr. "I wish I
could take you down to see it now," he said quietly, reaching up and
absently brushing a strand of her hair off her forehead.

"But then _you_ will be bored!  You shouldn't trouble yourself."
Meledei half protested.  To be honest, she didn't relish the time she
was going to spend in the infirmary.  Yes, she was going to be bored
when she wasn't doing whatever therapy the healers prescribed.  It was
nice that Tanom offered and she couldn't help but hope that he
wouldn't give in to her weak protests.  The corners of her lips
flicked upward a little at his gentle touch.  "You're very sweet,
though.  And I'll get to see it eventually."

"Like I'd want to be anywhere else," he frowned at her. "You know that
I'd do whatever I could for you. So don't even try and convince me
_not_ to come, cause then I'll just wear a whole in the floor outside
waiting for you to get well." He gave her a crooked grin at that. "Can
I get you anything now?"

"Well...there are some work I'm going to need to attend to."
Meledei's eyes began to sting and way heavily.  The fellis they had
given her was starting to work and it was making her woozy.  "They're
on my desk in my weyr.  Could you get them and bring them here?"
Maybe she could still do some work even if she couldn't go to it -
Tanom could bring it to her.

"Sure, I can do that for you," Tanom replied, reaching out to pat her
hand, "but I don't think today is the right time for that. You really
need your rest now." He was glad she was okay, but he was still
worried about her and knew she was not completely out of trouble yet.
"How about I stop in tomorrow morning before my regular duties with
the supplies and then when you're feeling up to it, they'll be here
for you."

"I want you to bring it anyway."  She was getting more sleepy and
those eyes kept jerking over only to be weighed down once more.
"Okay.  Tomorrow."  She agreed.  She had a feeling she probably
wouldn't be up to much that day anyway.  She
just...couldn't....think........straight...

Those eyes closed again only this time they didn't open.  Meledei's
entire body relaxed, any and all tension driven out of it by the
effects of the fellis.  She was, at least, temporarily relieved of the
pain that the Thread had driven into her body.

He rose, moved to her side and brushed her hair back from her face as
he gazed down at her. "Sleep well, Dei," Tanom said quietly, allowing
his fingers to rest on her face for just a few extra moments. After
watching to make sure she was not going to wake, Tanom slipped out
quietly.
