Pierka

Pierka

She was alone, always alone. It didn't bother her all that much
anymore because that was all she remembered. Where others had family,
even if they didn't like them all that much, she only had some casual
acquaintances. She treasured each of those friends. Maybe that was why
it was so difficult for her to leave them behind at Dolphin Hall.

Since she'd come to the Weyr her time had been taken up with classes
and chores. This time she was cleaning the barracks. Her own room as
small and her few possessions easily tidied each day. Others were not
quite so lucky and there were always things left around in the common
area that required straightening.

Pierka  had just finished and put the broom away when one of the other
Candidates came running in. Everyone was on edge knowing it could be
any time now and she was no different, but the gasped out warning that
the hatching was starting just made her roll her eyes like everyone
else in the room. They'd had enough false alarms over the last couple
of days. This time though... something was different.

The girl next to her grabbed her arm and hissed "Shhh Listen!"

There is was... the sound they had told her about. Humming dragons.
She ran outside to see them swooping into the hatching grounds.  Some
were carrying passengers and Weyr residents were making their way in
that direction.

"Pierka! Get ready right now," one of the weyrling staff spun her
around and gave her a gentle push back into the barracks.

She ran back into her small cubicle and pulled out her robes. Then
quickly stripping off her clothing. Standing there for a moment
looking at the pure white garment she stopped and though the dragons
still hummed and voices called out as they ran by. She stood there
almost naked staring at her robe, listening to the sounds, taking a
big smell and making a memory just as the mind healers had taught her.
This was special, a very big day for her. She felt very positive about
today. She reached out and pulled the soft fabric toward her and then
shrugged it over her head.

She brushed her short curls quickly as the heard the assistants
getting everyone lined up for the march into the hatching grounds. One
of the other girls sobbed in terror and she put her arm around her.
"It's ok," she said. "It's all going to be ok. You just have to walk
out there and Stand. Get out of the way if one is coming too close.
That's all you have to remember."

She took a deep breath and stepped back into her place in line. Then
they were walking into the cavern with the throngs of both human and
dragon witnesses. Her eyes automatically roamed the stands for a
familiar face as though there was a possibility of seeing one there.
She did nod to the Weyrleaders and bow to the great golden queen to
whose eggs she was being presented. "Thank you Angledouth," she said
though she doubted the dragon mother would hear her in all this great
crowd.

She imagined for a moment the great golden head turned in her
direction but it must have been her imagination. Before she could make
any more of it they were stopping and spreading around the clutch in a
semi-circle.

The dragon humming surged louder as the eggs seemed to shake and rock.
The little one she'd talked to and touched was behind the others where
she couldn't see it even though she strained from side to side to try
for a glimpse. Then a sharp crack filled the air and a sigh went up
from the crowd. She caught a flash of green from the direction she'd
been looking but all she could see around the eggs was part of a slimy
wing.

The little dragonet managed to right itself and wobble it's way around
the other eggs and across the sands, her head swinging back and forth
as if she couldn't quite find who she was looking for. Then, almost as
if the little green had been called, she turned quickly and darted as
fast as her clumsy wings would allow her towards... **me?** wonder
filled her.

}:I knew you would be here, I just knew! I'm your Liddith, and you are mine.:{

"Liddith?" she said with wonder and reached out to touch the little
green dragonet. "You're beautiful," she added with wonder.

}:So are you mine. Is there food?:{ She chuckled knowing that was the
next question. "This way," she said as she walked toward the waiting
Weyrling assistants and the prepared pails of meat. If other eggs
hatched, she neither knew nor cared. She was overwhelmed by a feeling so
fierce and consuming she couldn't think about anything else. And that
was when she realized... She would never be alone again.

}:Never,:{ agreed her lifemate. }:I will love you always mine.:{

**And I will love _you_ always.** "I'll never forget this moment,"
she added fiercely.
