R'enh got up from his desk to pour himself another cup of klah. An
afternoon of meetings was just fine with him. Getting to know his
riders and their strengths and weaknesses was a great part of his job
as Wingsecond. He carried the mug back to his desk and sipped as he
went over the notes for the next meeting.
Knocking on the door to the Wingsecond's office, E'ril wiped crumbs
off his tunic from the wherry sandwich he had enjoyed just moments
earlier. After being given the go ahead to enter, the bluerider entered
the office. "You wanted to see me, sir?"
Putting the mug down "Yes, welcome," he said rising. "Thank you for
coming to see me. I appreciate your time." Making the right choices
from the graduating weyrlings was sometimes hit or miss but with the
cooperation of the weyrling masters staff, they could make them more
of a hit.
"You have a Senior Weyrling class graduating soon don't you?" he asked
as a start.
"Not a problem at all," the bluerider replied as he made himself comfortable
in
chair. "Yes, we do have a class graduating and none too soon either.
Most of them will, I believe, be a great attribute to any fighting wing."
"Excellent," he was always glad to hear the praise of the
weyrlingmasters when it came to an upcoming class. "I have three slots
to fill and since this is the Weyrleaders wing we're flying topmost
level. Do you have any graduates you think are up to it?"
Putting his chin in his hand, the bluerider thought for a moment, silently
reviewing the senior class in his head. "Well, we've got one or two blues
I think might fit. We'll know for sure after the Blooding which one would be
more suited for the demands of the Weyrleader's wing. We do also have a
brown rider who's ready to take on that challenge. He's one of our older
students and very well adjusted."
R'enh nodded, "Sounds good, why don't you have the brown and one of
the blues join us for training tomorrow. I'll slot them in my nine and
see what they look like."
"They'll be there," E'ril replied as he made a mental note. "They will both
be quite surprised at the chance. Was there anything else in particular you
wanted to know?"
"Well, only any thoughts or things that are special about these two.
Or on the other hand, any concerns or points of focus to continue with
either of them would be helpful." R'enh liked to get started with a
new wingrider fully briefed if possible, especially a weyrling. It
made for a smoother transition and fewer mistakes, which translated to
fewer injuries or worse.
Quickly, E'ril reviewed yesterday's drills in his head focusing on the
performance of the riders in question. "Well, the brown takes orders well
and is very 'by the hide' if you will in his maneuvers. He needs to work on
thinking on his feet so maybe you and your wing could throw him some
surprises.
See how he reacts. The blue I'll be sending is a bit on the cocky
side. Don't get me wrong, the boy has skills, but he could be brought
down a notch or two. Think you can handle that?"
R'enh chuckled. "Yes, I think I can handle that." He looked down at
his preliminary schedule for the month "So, I guess the next thing we
need to decide is when you want to send the next group out for their
blooding.
"The word made E'ril cringe but he managed to not let this show on his
face. The blooding was a very difficult time for any Weyrlingstaffer
as they would be sending their charges out into the, at times,
unpredictable fight against Thread from which some would never return.
"I think they're just about ready. There are a few more things to fine
tune in the next sevenday or two but after that I'd say they're
ready."
He nodded, "Alright I'll talk to the Weyrlingmaster about the
specifics. I just like to know in advance about when we think it's
going to happen. Let's make sure they each get a chance for a couple
of practice runs during our training the week before they do the live
exersize."
"Duly noted, sir. You just can't be too prepared for these sorts of things.
It seems that I have some work to do then," he said as he stood. "If that
will
be all I'll go ahead and get started."
R'enh smiled and nodded at the other man. "My thought exactly. I'd
like to see them fully prepared and not petrified at the thought of
Thread raining on them." He thought a moment then rose, "I can't think
of anything else right now. Thank you for coming." He stuck out his
hand. With a firm handshake, E'ril replied, "We'll be in touch then." He left
the Wingsecond's office on a mission to deliver some surprising news.
