N'vanik

Taeshin stood outside of the door to the Weyrleader's office, sighing
in disbelief. Once again he had been called to the attention of the
leadership of the Weyr; and Teashin wanted nothing more than to go
unnoticed for a few sevendays. He was already in Janani's sights, he
didn't want to have N'vanik take him on as a special project as well.

Gathering what little courage he had left, Taeshin knocked, very
lightly on the door, hoping beyond hope that the Weyrleader wasn't in.

"Come in," N'vanik called.

Taeshin walked slowly into the Weyrleader's office, taking a lot of
effort to simply close the door behind him. He looked at the darkl
blonde man, who was a couple of inches taller than Taeshin himself
with some anxiety.

"You wanted to see me Weyrleader?" Taeshin asked, thinking he had said
almost the same thing to Janani some days before.

"Yeah. Have a seat."

Taeshin entered the room slowly and closed the door behind him. He
looked around the office, never having previously been in the room,
before he sat down in one of the chairs facing the Weyrleader.
Taeshin tried as hard as he could to give N'vanik a smile, but he
succeeded in only giving the Dolphin Cove Weyrleader the peculiar look
one gets when they have bitten into something unexpectedly sour.

"So, I've gotten some reports that you've been rude to the Weyrlings,"
N'vanik said.

Taeshin sighed heavily. He knew that one day _many_ Turns from now,
in his dotage, he would sit back and laugh at the stupidity of his
youth. Right now, he wanted nothing more to crawl under rock, and
wait out those Turns.

"Yes sir, Weyrleader" Taeshin replied softly.

He arched an eyebrow. "Well, at least you're not denying it. Why are
you being rude to them? Have they done something to you?"

Taeshin took a deep breath, wishing with all of his might they he
wouldn't have to go through this again.

"No Weyrleader, the haven't done anything to me. I'm jealous, stupid
and jealous is all" he said, finally being able to own up to his
feelings, having talked about it to so many people now.

Well, that made sense and it was good the boy was willing to admit it.
"So you're jealous they have dragons and you don't. Does it make you
feel any better? Being rude to them?"

"No...yes...I don't know" Taeshin responded. "It makes me
feel...stupid and immature, but I can't help it. The words, they just
come out"

Taeshin fidgeted with his tunic, his eyes downcast. Taeshin has
spoken his actions and feelings to a lot of people in the Weyr now,
but the telling of it never got easy. Each time he cringed when he
had to repeat his actions, and try to explain why he did what he did.

"Yeah, I used to have quite a mouth on me. Still do," N'vanik said.
"But being a jerk just drives people away and I can tell you,
honestly, life is better with friends."

Taeshin nodded at the Weyrleader's words. He was discovering that
when word got around that the Werywoman wasn't exactly pleased with
you, people in the Weyr tended to go out of their way to not be seen
with you. Taeshin couldn't blame them though, but it was getting kind
of lonely. And normally Taeshin was so jovial and social.

"Yes Weyrleader" he replied solemnly.

N'vanik studied the young man for a moment. "You know we can bar you
from Standing if we think you're unfit to be a rider."

Taeshin looked up at the Weyrleader, nodding solemnly. "Yes sir," he
said "Weyrwoman Janani and Angdelouth made that perfectly clear."

"So why do you think we should still allow you to Stand?"

Taeshin looked at the Weyrleader. "Because I promise to do better. I
know that no one is pleased with my behavior...I'm not even proud of
it. But I'm working on it sir. Janani has me talking to people who
didn't Impress right away. I'm learning to deal with the issue. But
I feel sir, I _really_ feel that I am meant to be a rider. If I don't
stand.....I just don't know what I would do" he said fervently.

That was more like it. "Alright. I'll leave the decision up to Janani,
but I'll recommend that you still be allowed to Stand."

Taeshin nodded, grateful to the Weyrleader. He knew that Janani was
new to the Weyr, and didn't know what the Weyrleader's and Weyrwoman's
working relationship was like, but the Weyrleader's words had to count
for something. "Thank you N'vanik. I won't make you regret your
decision" he said wholeheartedly.

"You better not," but N'vanik said it with a smile. "You're dismissed,
Taeshin."

"Yes Weyrleader" Taeshin said, getting up and heading to the door,
still a little shaken. "And thank you again" he added as he reached
the door, closing it behind him.
