K'deren

K'deren

Kwiksol had been making a point to meet a variety of people during each nights dinning hour. He looked around, and found someone by himself. **Wingsecond knots** he thought as he began to walk over.

"Hello there, I'm Kwiksol, do you mind company?"

Perhaps the lad hadn't learnt to read the knots of the riders correctly yet, thought K'deren as he looked him over. He seemed young, and by his knots was one of the freshly arrived harpers. "Sit a moment," he said, thinking that he could perhaps enlighten him a little.

"I'm from the Harper Hall," he said, extending a hand. "It would be a great favor, sir, if you could tell me more about my new home? I had given up ever setting foot in a weyr couple years back, and now I'm here, and I'd like to know _everything._"

K'deren extended his hand after a moment. "K'deren, Winsgsecond. First thing you need to know is who is who. Some people will not appreciate being interrupted like this."

"I'm sorry sir, but I did ask. If you didn't want company, I would have gone away." He gathered his stuff up. "I can still leave now if you wish?"

"No, you are here now, and courtesy is expected of us all."

"Thank you sir," Kwiksol responded, settling down again. "So, who else should I steer away from at dinner times?"

"The Weyrleader himself may not appreciate company just arriving. He's, he's a complicated man," replied K'deren after a second, his personal feelings about the man who led them not necessary to be shared.

"I'll take a note of that," Kwiksol responded with a grin. "Anyone else particular?"

"Not that I can think of."

"So, now that I know who I _shouldn't_ bother, anyone I should?"
Kwiksol asked with a laugh. "No, actually any other advice so I don't step on anyone's toes around here?"

"Most people are friendly, but just as anywhere, if someone looks preoccupied, or busy, chances are that they really are."

Kwiksol was really getting the point he should perhaps be a little less friendly. "Ok, got that," he said.

"Don't take it the wrong way, I'm sure everyone will be glad to meet new people, it's just some of us have things to deal with. As I'm sure you Harpers do after the fire."

"Ahhh a poignant parallel. Look at these hands," he said offering them up. "All us instrumentalists have been only working on replacement work. I think I've lost count how many drums or guitars or pipes or whatever I've made or fixed since the fire." He drew his hands back he looked at K'deren thoughtfully. "But, I cannot even begin to imagine what has been happening here."

"And that's just as well, I'd not wish that on anyone."

Kwiksol gave a weak laugh. "I'm almost sure, one of our composers is probably right now trying to turn the moment to music."

"I'm not so sure that would be a good idea."

"Maybe not," Kwiksol shrugged, "I'm sure there are more then a few floating around about the new partnership between Hall and Weyr we have here. That should be a more uplifting one."

"I hope it would," K'deren smiled at last. "Are you writing one about that?"

"Oh, I'm no composer," he replied, scissoring his hands. "I don't have the talent for that, not everyone does."

"So what do you do?"

"I'm an instrument-tor," Kwiksol said, "I craft, or repair, instruments."

"Then perhaps you may have need of my other skills at some point," replied K'deren indicating his knots.

"Certainly!" Kwiksol replied. "Right now though we've been working hard to replace the wooden instruments, since most of those burnt up in the fire. Luckily many of the metals ones were salvagable."

"Well maybe one day soon we'll meet again."

"Alright, I guess so," Kwiksol said, taking that as his cue to leave the Wingsecond to his privacy.
