Description: A new candidate comes to the Weyr
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 13 of Turn 6
She trudged up the hill carrying her small bag with the only
possessions that were important to her. Each step pulled her farther
and farther away from the only home she could remember. Clutched in
her other hand was a small piece of hide that said she just might
belong someplace else. The walk itself wouldn't take that long, half a
candlemark at the most.
Sometimes it amazed her how many questions people asked her before
they really believed that she didn't have any memories past about two
turns ago. She saw face after face in her minds eye each one different
and wonderful. Some had really wanted to help and others well, they
didn't bear thinking on and she'd decided it was ok to forget them.
She reached the top of the hill and turned to look back. The
buildings, the dock, even the dolphins in the water held memories for
her. She wanted to remember them all just like this. Mentally she
painted a picture of the way the light caught sparkles in the waves
and flung them at her. Memories were precious to her and treasured in
the middle of the night. She had gone so long without any after she'd
been found.
A couple of her friends were still standing there watching her and she
lifted an arm waving goodbye. In her own mind it wasn't like she was
going away forever, they were right there almost next door, it was an
easy walking distance and she could visit anytime. She knew they saw
her when they raised their own arms in farewell.
Pierka turned and went over the lip of the hill on her way to the
Weyr. Ahead of her were dragons. She'd gone up to the Weyr time after
time to look at them, to look around. They were always friendly and
welcoming of her questions. But always she went back to the hall. That
would change today she thought. Today she was staying.
She actually began to hum a tune as she walked and it wasn't long
before she was walking into the weyrbowl from the sea past the
herdbeast paddock and the lake. She crossed most of the Weyrbowl
before anyone said anything to her. The blue rider who had given her
the small piece of hide had pointed out the candidate barracks.
"You looking for someone?" called an elderly rider with brown rider's knots.
"Yes sir," she said. "I'm looking for the candidate master."
He smiled and pointed. "That building there," he said. "You'll find
his office down the hall and to the left. But I don't think he's going
to be there for about another candlemark. I think he went to the
dining hall to get some lunch. Have you had anything to eat yet?"
"I really should..." she realized that just going there to sit
wouldn't accomplish a single thing. "No, I haven't had lunch yet." She
looked up at the tall man. "Want to show me the way?"
"Yeah sure." he pointed to an alcove inside the door. "Drop your bag
there, no one will bother it." He walked off past the barracks and led
her right into the dining cavern.
She followed his example and took a small portion of several things.
She slid her plate onto a small table and was a bit surprised when the
brown rider joined her.
"So," he said picking up his spoon and digging into his soup. "You get
searched?"
"Kind of," she said then bit into her sandwich. The bread was fresh
and melted in her mouth.
"How do you 'kind of' get searched?" He blew on the soup before
ladling it into his mouth.
Pierka chewed quickly to clear and swallow her food before she
answered. "I was just sitting watching some of the dragons and a blue
rider came up to me and gave me this." She put the piece of hide on
the table.
"May I?" At her nod he picked up the piece of hide. He examined it and
his lips quirked into a smile. "I guess you did 'kind of' get
searched." He pushed the note back to her. "Where are you from?"
"Well most recently Dolphin Hall. I was apprenticed there."
He nodded. "And what's your name?" he asked.
"Pierka," she answered as she popped the last bite into her mouth.
"Well Pierka, welcome to Dolphin Cove Weyr! I'm sure you're going to
like it here." He grinned.
