"'You'll take my hand if you wish to see another dawn,'" Roima said as
he thrust his hand out to her.
"Seeing no other choice, Betisia swallowed her fear, and putting her
trust fully in the captain, placed her hand into his."
U'kaiah lowered the book with a long sigh. "End of chapter. And I need
a break. My eyes are starting to cross."
Tavia held out the small piece of yarn they were going to use for a
bookmark and smiled. "I love the way you change your voice for the
different characters."
"I'm so used to reading to Kaiafel," he chuckled, putting the string in
the place to mark it. Wrapping his arm back around her, he pulled her
close. "So how do you like it so far?"
"I've never had anyone read to me before," she leaned into him
smiling. "I really enjoyed it."
"Good. We'll keep reading then." He kissed the top of her head. "But
now it's your turn to talk for a while."
She grinned plucking the book from his hands and opening it to the
yarn. She didn't know how her light soprano was going to sound when
she tried to read the Captain but she tried to make it as low as
possible. Unfortunately, she kept laughing as she tried to read.
"All right, I think we need a break," he laughed, taking the book back.
"I think we can just talk for a while, don't you?"
"Yes," she was still finding it hard to control her laughter. "I'm
sorry, you're just way better at it than I am. How is Kaiafel by the
way?"
"Growing every day, I swear." U'kaiah smiled fondly when he thought of
his son. "ANd he's informed me that if he doesn't Impress he wants to
be a red fruit farmer so he can eat as many as he likes."
She chuckled thinking she could almost see him saying that. The boy
was precocious in many ways. "I wanted to be a baker like my father,
and a healer, and ride a dragon. I couldn't see why I couldn't do it
all. Maybe that's why I learned to cook."
"You know? Maybe we could do another picnic here sometime. You know...
when there isn't a hurricane."
"I'm sure he'd like that. Maybe you can cook something up for us," he
suggested, rather curious to try something of her making. "You were
certainly ambitious - a cook, a healer and a dragonrider all in one."
"Well back that a lot of things were possible. Or at least I thought
they were and my parents didn't discourage me." She half smiled. "I'd
love to cook for you two. I'll bet he'd love to play with dolphins."
U'kaiah almost told her that Kaiafel had good memories of Dolphin Cove
and couldn't wait to come back. But in the boy's mind, memories of
Dolphin Cove were inseparable from memories of Trae. They had been fond
of each other, and her sudden disappearance from their lives had been
hard on them both. It would be a bitter sweet excursion, to say the
least. But he didn't want to talk about that. Not with Tavia. Not
right now. He needed to change the subject.
"You know, thinking about you cooking remind me of a little game I used
to play with a girl I knew many turns ago. We called it, 'Am I Right'.
We would take turns telling each other something we assumed was true,
and every guess ended with the words 'Am I right'. It was funny
sometimes just how wrong we could be in our impressions. And sometimes
we hit it straight on. When you talk about cooking, my first thought is
that it's been a long time since you've cooked for someone, and you're
itching for a chance. But you don't just cook for anyone. Am I right?"
"You _are_ right." She thought a moment. "There aren't a whole lot of
people who read books like this for recreation," she said. "But you
love it. It's one of your favorite ways to pass time when you aren't
working. Am I right?"
"You are right. But it's been a long time since I've read a book like
this. I don't have much time for reading anymore, and when I do it's
usually nonfiction or it's research for my senior journeyman project."
Which he hadn't worked on for quite a while, he realized. "But you're
always working on your craft. You love it. Sometimes you love being a
healer even more than being a dragonrider. Am I right?"
She had the grace to blush and knocked her shoulder into him. "Yes. I
have to say I've had a good time spending more of it in the infirmary
since I can't fly Fall right now. But I love Sawauth more than
anything." she said. }:I love you too mine.:{ The flood of warmth
flowed from her lifemate at the oddest times. "Trust her to catch
that," she chuckled. "You though," she looked down. "You're more
ambitious than you let anyone know. Am I right?" Her eyes slid back to
his face.
"I never thought my ambition was a secret." What bronzerider lacked
ambition, after all? "I want to be Weyrleader. I _will_ be Weyrleader.
Anything less than that is failure."
She smiled and turned toward him. "My my, so intense. Of course you
will be." She reached up to touch his face. "And a great one."
U'kaiah turned his body a little to face her, studying her silently for
a moment. He raised his thumb to lightly caress her lips, a warm glow
shinning in his eyes. "You like that I'm intense. And you like that
I'm ambitious. You like my ego. You like that I am confident and even
a little arrogant. You know I'm not just a trophy bronzerider,
strutting around just for show. The more you know me, the more you like
me. And lately you've find yourself looking at the calendar and
wondering just how long you have to wait until I show up on your ledge
again. Am I right?"
Her smile was slow but as intense as his speech. "Yes," she said "You
are right." He was so much more than just one of the over inflated
egos that happened to impress bronze. "You know that while this
started out to be just fun and flirting it's become more. You know
that I see _you_ the person
that you are and _that_ is what I like. You know that I value your
friendship more than a great lay. More than that you know I will never
attempt to put any strings on you. Am I right?"
"Yes, you are. And I appreciate that about you." He felt he could be
who he was with her, without fear of hurting her. It was a very
liberating feeling. "You know I would never try to possess you or hold
you back in any way. But I'll tell you something you might not know. I
can't stop looking at the calendar either."
That brought a glowing smile to her lips. "Yes," she said. "Thats what
makes this a wonderful friendship."
