Settling In

Writers: Cali, Jane
Date Posted: 12th October 2009

Characters: Trellyn, Leisenn
Description: Leisenn checks on Trellyn and see's how she's settling in.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 5, day 2 of Turn 5

"I'm sorry I'm late," the elderly Dolphin Hall Hallmaster said when she found the journeywoman in the small office in the corner of the shed at the end of the wharf. "Four or five days overdue to collect your first report, I think, but I didn't want to rush you," she finished, her smile suggesting that there were other reasons for leaving the journeywoman alone to settle into her new job in her own way.

"I've it ready, somewhere." Trellyn said after welcoming the Hallmaster. She'd settled into the dock position rather easily, she'd filled in before and knew what was expected of her. She found her report under a list of upcoming ship arrivals and handed it over.

Without looking at it Leisenn rolled it and seated herself into a chair - the only spare chair - in the cluttered room and looked about her. "It's completely yours now. To organize - reorganize - or whatever your want. Bring all the surplus hidework along to the Hall for storage if you like."

Trellyn nodded in understanding. The place certainly wasn't immaculate, people just used the place for a few days at a time so never invested in it. "I'll do that. There certainly isn't a need for six month old logs in here."

"There probably isn't the need for most of it, given how close the Hall is." Leisenn smiled. "This is the best of all worlds - an outposting, but not far enough away that it needs to stand alone. How are you enjoying being 'master' of your own domain?"

"Everyone here is very nice." Trellyn replied. In truth she hadn't talked to many people except when necessary, and rarely interacted with anyone outside the dock crew. She just wasn't ready to deal with all the innocent and sometimes persistent flirting that the Weyr offered. The dock crew were mostly seafarers like herself and their behavior was more muted.

"And is there enough work here to keep you occupied?" Leisenn asked. While the position had been unoccupied with dolphineers from the Hall doing the work on a roster system it had seemed to be a very little job and the Hallmaster now wondered if it was the best role for a young journeywoman who had the ability to progress in the craft.

Trellyn gave a small smile. "Oh yeah. It's busiest in the mornings, what with the fish and weather reports from the dolphins. Once the ships go out for the day's catch it slows down a bit. Still, there's plenty to keep me awake."

"Let me know if you feel there's room in your day for a project." Leisenn was sure she could find something that could be useful for Trellyn's future in amongst all those things that 'ought to be looked into sometime'.

She didn't know if she liked the sound of a 'project'. If it required her to spend more time at the Dolphin Hall she'd have to explain why she didn't want to be there, and she didn't want to talk to the Hallmaster about Ednan. "Well, I'm still getting settled, but I'll let you know if it looks like I've got more free time than I can handle."

"All right. Now, would you like to take me on a tour of your domain and tell me about it? Good points, bad points, things that could be improved?"

"Sure, right this way."
