N'mor sauntered to the dining cavern, feeling like the Lord holder of whole Pern. Since his visit to Dragonsfall weyr, he had been filled with new kind of self-confidence. He spotted a familiar greenrider, one he liked and sauntered over to her. "Hello, Oria," he greeted with a big grin.
"Bronzerider," she said as the youngster walked by.
"Would you like some company for your dinner?" he asked and leaned presumptously to her chair-back.
"And why might I want that?" she asked.
"Dashing young bronzerider like me..." N'mor started full of himself but a little bit hesitation crept to his voice.
That bit of hesitation was enough for Oria to pick up on. She stifled the laugh that threatened to escape, and looked him up and down. "Young might be the word," she observed.
"Hey!" N'mor protested. "One has to start sometime."
"Perhaps with a girl your own age," she suggested a little more gently.
"But they are so childish," N'mor said, sounding rather childish himself.
That did it. The not-so-old herself greenrider laughed at this, she couldn't help it. "I think that shows why you should try a girl, maybe a candidate?"
N'mor looked mortified. "Tell me, where did I go wrong?" he asked helplessly.
"You didn't go wrong," she said, "you're just very young."
"I can't change that, can I?" he asked.
"Maybe in a turn or so it won't be so obvious." For now, it seemed to her he looked his age, but time in the wings and he'd bulk up a little and grown taller, age would then become less obvious.
N'mor gave her a lopsided grin. "I come back to you then," he threatened.
"You never know, in a turn or two Degrorth might choose your bronze in a flight."
"True. Keddy hasn't chased anyone yet," the thought cheered up him a bit. At least now he knew what he had to do, if Kedvencth happened to catch someone.
"He will, when you are both ready."
N'mor nodded. "But can I sit with you anyway? As a friend? I won't try to hit on you, I promise," he asked.
"As a friend," she said.
"I'll behave. I'll just get my food first," N'mor said.
Oria grinned as the bronzerider headed off to the serving line. Maybe the youngster had learned something.
