"So what are you here to steal?" Y'nub asked by way of greeting as he
approached the pirate. He held his hand out and thumped Jerroll's
shoulder as they shook hands.
"I'm here to _sell_," Jerroll said, chuckling.
"Oh, so you already stole something, and now you're here to get the
dirt off your hands, smart man." Y'nub reasoned, he'd known Jerroll
long enough to know he was never completely clean. "I hope you'll
stay around long enough for the festivities."
"Of course! That's one of the reasons we're here. It's work _and_
play." He clapped Y'nub's back. "Now, how about buying an old man a
drink?"
Y'nub considered it for a moment then nodded, "I've got a small amount
of the good stuff in my weyr, or we could go where there is a large
amount of decent stuff. Your pick."
"We can talk more freely in your weyr."
The bronzerider made sure the pirate was settled comfortably on his
couch. He sat himself in the plush chair across from Jerroll and took
a long drink from his glass. "So what required being away from long
ears? You know I'm mostly retired after what went down in the North."
"So you're still running errands for that uncle of yours?" Jerroll
sipped at his drink.
Y'nub tilted his head in acknowledgment, "When necessary. I can't
turn my back on family after all."
"Of course." Although there were plenty that could do just that.
The bronzerider leaned back, relaxed, but ready, one never knew with a
pirate. "And what about you? You still with Lerra trolling the
Southern waters?"
"Yeah. We went up the river for a bit. That was a nice change."
"If you ever feel like trying your luck up North I could probably get
you on one of my uncle's ships." Maybe not as anything as fancy as
first mate, but it'd be profitable.
"Leave the Sails? And Lerra?" Jerroll shook his head. "Never."
Y'nub nodded, understanding the loyalty that existed between the two.
"Luck turns my friend. The offer stands if you ever decide you need
it."
"Thanks anyway."
"Sure," Y'nub waved it off with a flick of his wrist, "That's what
friends are for."
Jerroll nodded. "And I suppose a friend wouldn't mind letting me know
if he hears whispers? Any hints that someone suspects that we might be
anything but legitimate?"
Y'nub chuckled though it was a very serious subject. "Oh I've heard
whispers. Something about stealing a holder's wife comes to mind."
Jerroll's eyes widened, then he shook a finger at Y'nub. "You can't
steal something that comes to you willingly."
"I believe the story I heard was something to the affect of, you
kidnapped her, brainwashed her, brought her back for ransom, then with
said brainwashing convinced her to leave her husband and children for
life at sea." Y'nub ticked the points off of his fingers.
"The way rumors get spread, you'd think everyone was a harper spinning
a tale. The truth just isn't interesting enough." Jerroll took a long
drink. This _was_ the good stuff.
Y'nub laughed, "Somehow I tend to believe that it was more true than
not. Still, you might not act surprised when you go into port for the
next few months if the holders lock away their wives."
Jerroll snorted. "Even though they're safer now than they've been in a
long time."
"You have fun trying to explain _that_ to them." the bronzerider said
before taking another drink. "And I hope that our friendship can
extend to keeping your ears open for whispers as well."
"Of course."
"Well then, let's raise our glasses to good ears and a profitable new
turn." Y'nub stated as he followed his advice and lifted his glass in
the air.
