"I see you're up and about," Jerroll said, leaning next to the woman on the rail.
The woman turned her gaze to the man and smiled. "Yes...yes, I am. I'm still a bit wobbly, but I'm getting better, I think."
"Do you remember anything yet?"
The woman shook her head, sighing and looked down where her arms crossed over the railing. They were still red and she still stung from burn, but she hoped that the worst of it would soon be over. "No. I'm afraid not.
I feel like it's there, somewhere, hovering in the back of my mind, but I can't reach it."
"Well, maybe it'll come to you. Do you remember your name, at least?"
Jerroll asked.
The question was answered with another shake of the head. "No." She paused, then sighed. "I suppose I should choose something so you have something to call me by."
Jerroll nodded. "We can't keep calling you 'that woman we found'." He smiled slightly.
The woman pondered for a moment, then asked, "What would you suggest?"
"Just pick something you like the sound of."
The woman shrugged, thought for a moment, then asked softly, "What about Edele?"
"I think that's a good name. Edele," he repeated, smiling.
"Then I guess Edele I will be." The named seemed to stir something within her, but what? She wasn't sure. The woman reached up to rub her forehead. "I wish I could remember..." She said softly, staring into the ocean, the waves lapping at the ship.
He laid a hand on her shoulder. "It'll come to you, in time. Until then, we'll take you wherever you want to go. Or you could stay aboard the Silver Sails."
The offer was a kind one and the woman smiled to Jerroll. "I think...perhaps, if it's okay, I'd like to stay here. I don't remember if I've ever been on a ship before," Of course, she must have been to have been found so far from shore, but that was not in her memory, "But...I like it. It's nice."
"I'm rather fond of her myself." He patted the rail. "Do you have any skills--?" he laughed at himself and shook his head. "You wouldn't remember that, would you? How do you feel about cooking? We need a decent cook, and maybe we'll get lucky with you."
"I...I can try." Edele wished she could remember. So many things were escaping her and she felt so unsettled. "I'm not sure, but...I'll do my best."
"That's all anyone can ask. And if cooking doesn't work out, we'll find something else for you to do," he said. "Oh, and I'm afraid you'll have to give up that nice comfortable bed. I miss it."
The woman tilted her head back and laughed. "What a shame. I must say, I was enjoying it. I suppose I'll have to deal, after all you have been more than kind to me, and I thank you."
"You're very welcome. And I think you'll make a fine addition to the crew." The only problem was trying to gauge how she would react to their less than legal activities.
