Description: J'darin and Traelyn explain to T'moran what Nyith and Hasaarth have declared
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 3 of Turn 3
Traelyn glanced out of the corner of her eye at J'darin as they walked together down the corridor to T'moran's office. She hadn't much appreciated the tone he had used with her before he had risen from bed, but she found that she was too concerned about the happenings of the day to show her irritation. She? A _senior_ Weyrwoman?
They were barely out of bed, but this was a grievous happening. J'darin himself wasn't even sure it was true, though the dragons - Hasaarth and Nyith - seemed to think it was so. He walked along beside Traelyn, mentally cursing. Kalina would have been a grand partner for him, despite all their fights. He and she could usually go to bed to end arguments.
He often wondered if she had slept with T'moran, perhaps they'd have gotten along better?
A faint smile curved his lips at that thought, but it soon faded. This was not Kalina, and he wasn't sure _what_ kind of a Weyrwoman she would make.
}: A great one, beloved. A great one, like her dragon. :{ Frowning in his mind at Hasaarth, he turned to Traelyn as they paused outside of T'moran's office. "Perhaps I should do all the talking, Traelyn. T'moran is not going to believe this happened, never mind _how_
it happened." Then he raised his hand to knock.
She frowned as she watched him rap on the door. She would _not_ be pushed aside and dismissed like this. Deciding to leave it for now, Traelyn smoothed her expression and waited.
T'moran blinked in confusion when the pair entered his office after he'd called for them to enter. J'darin and Nyith's rider were the last people he'd expected to see this evening. After she'd been neglectful enough to allow her gold to rise out of her home Weyr, he would rather have thought the young woman would have crept back to her own Weyr, hoping to avoid the undoubted wrath of Weyrwoman Jaela.
"Good evening. Can I help you?" he asked, his expression one of polite disapproval.
"I'm afraid you aren't going to like this, T'moran." J'darin frowned again at Traelyn. How _had_ this happened? And was it really true?
Turning back to the man who he thought was his friend - and hoped would still be his friend - J'darin went on. "Nyith and Hasaarth both say Moriath will not rise again. If we go by tradition, that would make Traelyn here and her gold queen Senior at Dolphin Cove." He said nothing about the other half of it, knowing T'moran would connect those dots himself.
The Weyrleader - or perhaps former Weyrleader - just stared at him in astonishment. "You can't be serious." Surely J'darin had left practical jokes of this sort behind him when he'd graduated from weyrling training.
J'darin's tanned face paled at T'moran's look. "I am afraid I'm completely serious, T'moran. I suppose we can put tradition aside due to the ... ahh... unusual circumstances. Traelyn should never have had Nyith out this close to Rising." He glanced at the goldrider, the vague disapproval reflected there too. He hadn't yet come to grips with it himself.
She returned his look, her chin tilting up just slightly. "You're right.
I shouldn't have." It was no use dwelling on that now though. Later. But not now. Her eyes flickered to T'moran. "Nyith won't leave here. I've tried to persuade her...but she's adamant."
T'moran's eyes unfocused as he spoke with Haldarth, his bewilderment growing as his bronze confirmed the story J'darin and Traelyn had told him. Nyith was not a dragon of this Weyr and her rising should have had no effect on the Weyrleadership. However, it seemed she was the first gold to rise in Dolphin Cove after the retirement of the senior queen, though no-one had known the true extent of Moriath's injuries, and by tradition that made her the senior. Moreover, the dragons appeared to have accepted her.
"I suggest we get in contact with the Weyrleaders of Dragonsfall to discuss this matter," he said eventually. Perhaps the senior queen there would be able to convince Nyith to abandon her claim.
"Aye, if you like, T'moran. It has certainly never happened before that I can recall, though the Wingleader from there - U'kaiah I think his name is
- makes a study of records, as does their Weyrwoman, I believe. Perhaps they know what tradition will say." The bronzerider paused. "I have no particular wish to exchange duties with you, but it is what we are trained for, and bred to do."
T'moran only nodded. "I will do as tradition demands, but first I want to be certain of what that is. Shall we leave for Dragonsfall immediately?
They must be wondering where you are, Lady Traelyn."
J'darin nodded, the habit of obeying T'moran an easy one to keep. "I have no objections. Traelyn? You must want to speak to your Weyrwoman there, and explain things to her."
She inclined her head. "Yes." But there would be no _explaining_ of anything, and she knew it.
