Greenrider on a tree

Writers: Eimi, Paula
Date Posted: 17th January 2008

Characters: Aileyan, Telemon, U'kaiah
Description: Aileyan has an self-inflicted accident that takes her to the infirmary.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 7 of Turn 4

Aileyan looked at the tree critically. It was perfect for climbing. Sturdy brances that grew out from the trunk in almost 90 degrees angle and the lower ones were within her reach. She was a good climber, she had practically lived in trees as a child. She jumped, reached the first branch and was soon steadily getting upwards. Enjoying it. What she didn't take in count was the season, winter. The branches were covered by ice.
She was about seven or eight feet up from the ground when Aileyan felt her fingers slip from the icy branch. She tried to hold on but it was too slippery. She saw the blue sky as she fell thru the branches, heard Kjarliheth's distressed bellow and then she hit the ground. "Ouch."

"Breath in and hold you breath," Telemon told the greenrider. Aileyan complied and the winced when the healer poked her ribs.

"You have broken ribs, but they are not punctured you lungs," was the healer's verdict. "You're a lucky one."

"You say?" Aileyan's voice was faint. She was hurting all over.

"Thank Faranth for that," U'kaiah said with a shake of his head. Broken ribs were bad enough, but it could have been so much worse.

"Did you hit your head?" Telemon asked after he had finished with her ribcage.

"No, I don't think so, I kinda landed back first," Aileyan replied.

"I check it anyway, please unbraid your hair," Telemon asked.

Obediently she started to open her hair. The tight braid opened up to massive, long brown and thick hair. ** Why did you have to call _Kalamath_ to help? ** She asked her dragon while getting the hair down.

}: Because. :{ the green sounded sulky. Her rider's accident had upsetted and frighted her. They had survived a turn in fighting wing without being scored and then she goes to fell off from tree!

Telemon buried his fingers to her hair, trying to feel the skull beneath. He tried to ignore the very male reaction to feeling her hair slid thru his fingers. She really had most wonderful hair. "I can't find any bumps or bruises. Do you have headache?!

"No," Aileyan said.

"What were you doing in that tree anyway?" U'kaiah asked, not sure if he should be more angry at her foolishness or amused that a grown woman was climbing trees.

Aileyan felt like the underdog, sitting half-naked on healer's exam table under the scrutiny of two men. So she tried to resort to humour. "It was the tree's fault. It beaconed me, challenged me. 'come and climb me' it said and waived it's branches invitingly." She saw the incomprehensive look in the Weyrhealer's eyes.
She sighed ** Nobody undestands me.**

}: Well, of course not, when you sound that daft. The whole thing was daft { Kjarliheth scolded.

"Are you sure you didn't hit your head?" Telemon asked.

The Wingleader was trying to hide his smile. He understood her perfectly. In fact, it reminded him of something his good friend Harki would say. He liked this girl. She had spirit.

Telemon finished his examination. He picked up a notedpad. "Broken ribs, massive bruising, sprained wrist and some surface scrapes. I like to keep you here overnite, to be sure you don't have any internal damage that doesn't show up yet. Oh, and you're grounded until those ribs are healed.
And keep out of trees from now on."

"Yes, sir," Aileyan replied meekly, but there was spark in her eyes that told otherwise.

U'kaiah tried to keep a strict tone to his voice as he crossed his arms over his chest. He was going to lose _another_ rider out of his wing. But somehow he just couldn't find it in him to be mad, as much as he ought to be. "I have lost riders to pregnancies, sports injuries and Threadscore, but I have to say, Aileyan, this is the first time I've lost a rider to a tree."

"I won't let that happen again. I won't let any tree best me!" Aileyan promised.

Telemon rolled his eyes: dragonriders!
