Possibilities.

Writers: Estelle, Roxanne
Date Posted: 4th October 2005

Characters: Jyramikah, T'moran
Description: Jyramikah and T'moran discuss the possibility of bringing in another goldrider since no one knows when Kalina would recover.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 1 of Turn 3

"Thank you for coming, Lady Jyramikah." T'moran stood as the goldrider entered his office and quickly pulled up a chair for her. "I heard via Haldarth that Moriath's rider - Lady Kalina - was feeling no better today and the healers have confined her to her bed. Have you seen her?"

"I stopped by for a short visit, but there's no change from yesterday."
Jyramikah replied as she took the chair he pulled up for her. She still hadn't quite figured out what it was about T'moran that made Kalina so upset. He was nice enough to her the few times that she spoke with him.

"I'm sorry to hear that." He might not have _liked_ Kalina, but he wouldn't have wished an injury on her. Even so, he felt guiltily glad for the respite from her interfering with his authority with the Wings...not that he'd speak _that_ thought aloud. "Have the healers said anything about how long a recovery period she'll need?"

"Not anytime soon, I'm afraid. Other than that I don't know if they even know how long it might take."

He sighed. "This could be a serious problem. I'm sure I don't need to stress to you how urgently we need new weyrlings to replace those who were lost -
so that we no longer need to rely on Dragonsfall and the other Weyrs. With only one active queen dragon...that will take a long time. Time we don't have."

Jyramikah nodded. She was fully aware of the current situation although she had no suggestions on how to fix it other than the most obvious one. "Is it possible to get another goldrider to transfer in?" she asked offering the one solution that she could think of.

"I suppose so." T'moran was reluctant to seek another goldrider himself. He had already had help from most of the Weyrs, and the idea of having to ask another Weyrleader for one of their most prized dragonpairs hurt his pride.
Still, the Weyr came first, and it looked as though he had no other option.
"Do you know of any other goldriders who might be seeking a transfer?"

"Not off the top of my head, but I can find out." Jyramikah replied.

"That would be helpful. If Moriath and Kalina's injuries keep them out of action, you might be acting as Weyrwoman and Wingleader for a long time and you deserve some help. At least we have an attractive climate - perhaps an older lady goldrider might prefer our warmth and sea breezes to the ice and snow of the far north." T'moran wouldn't deny he'd prefer an older and steadier gold pair to balance out Kalina. Though he admitted secretly to himself that he was tempted to ask Lenala and Vilarth, he doubted Weyrwoman Tsaera would let her new goldrider be poached after such a short time.

"I'll make some inquries. Is there anything else you need me to do?" she asked wanting to be as helpful as possible during the next few sevendays.
They were going to be very shorthanded and she wanted to relieve as much of the burden as she could. Hopefully they would get another goldrider in before Ikoladoith rose again. She had been the acting Weyrwoman a few times now and did not have the desire to be Weyrwoman in truth.

"Other than the Weyrwoman's duties, I don't think so. You've already been a great help by filling in for Kalina so efficiently," T'moran replied. "And if you see Kalina, let her know that I wish her a swift recovery."

"I will let her know. Do we have any riders who are well enough to work a flamethrower if need be?" she asked hopefully. The queen's wing was in need of riders as much as the fighting wigns were, but they could manage with what they had for a bit longer. It never hurt to ask, though.

He frowned. "You'll have to ask in the Infirmary, but I doubt it. I can't release any of my active riders to the Queen's Wing, I'm afraid. They're needed more in the other Wings."

"I thought as much, we'll make do somehow. I'll speak to the infirmary just to see how everyone is progressing. We'll get the Weyr back on its feet again." she said not at all surprised by the Weyrleader's answer.

"We will." He only hoped that his confidence wasn't misplaced. Even with all they'd done to rebuild the Wings, he was still not satisfied with the number of active riders he had available to him. Unlike the goldrider, he wished that her dragon would rise soon, if only to restore a proper leadership to the Weyr and boost the number of weyrling riders. Then someone else could deal with the headache of being Weyrleader and leave him in peace! "Is there anything else I can do for you?"

"I don't think so. I'll let you know if I find anything." she replied.
