Birigundi

Birigundi

"I really appreceate that you wanted to come along, Biri," Rigella said. "Although it's just routine check up."

"Of course I want to come along. It's my baby too, right?" he smiled, giving her hand a little squeeze.

Telemon summoned them in. "Hello Rigella, how are been? And this must be the baby's father?" the weyrhealer gave Birigundi a friedly smile.

"That would be me." Shards, this was like dejavu. Hadn't he just heard those words come out of a healer's mouth the first time he brought Nia for an appointment?

"And didn't I just resently deliver another child you have fathered?" Telemon asked after a closer look of the candidate.

Birigundi looked at Rigella out of the corner of his eye. "Yes, I guess so..." he mumbled guiltily. Shards, did people have to bring _that_ up now?

Telemon shook his head to it. Only in a Weyr! "Well, let's get to business. How have you been Rigella?"

"Quite well. Bit tired, but I haven't had contractions for a while."

"That's good," Telemon said. He rather felt that the previous healer had over reacted to her contractions.

Birigundi shifted feel silently, suddenly very self-conscious. It was obvious the Weyrhealer didn't approve of his... fertility...

Telemon paid no further attention to Birigundi. Instead he weighed Rigella and experessed his satisfaction to the way she gained weight. Not too much nor too little. Then she asked her to lay on the exam table and started to feel around her belly.

"The baby is still head upwards but seems to be a lively little thing." "Yes," Rigella grunted when the baby kicked inside with force. "Do you want to feel? The baby is active and moving right now," Telemon asked Birigundi.

Birigundi almost pointed out that he had felt it before, but he surely didn't want to tempt the healres displeasure more by seeming to be an uninterested father. He placed his hand over the spot and smiled up at Rigella. "He sure is excited to have someone knew to show off for."

"Tell him to stop kicking my bladder, " Rigella smiled back.

Telemon wrote down few notes. "Everything is fine. The baby is growing well and active. Next check up is month from now, unless you feel you need to see me earlier."

"All right," Rigella said and got up, pulling her clothes back on. She still hadn't formed a final opinion of this new Weyrhealer. Sometimes he seemed so nice and warm, other time awfully prejusticed.

As they walked out of the infirmary Birigundi let out a long drawn out sigh. "Shards, is it my imagination, or did that man not like me very much?"

Rigella nodded. "He comes from hold. Sometimes I get feeling he doesn't approve lot of the things weyrfolk do," she said.

"The way he shook his head... As if I had done something _wrong_..." Sure, Birigundi had lived outside the Weyr growing up, but he knew better than to pass judgement on the Weyr way of life. Shards, he not only accepted it. He embraced it whole heartedly! Maybe that's what that healer needed to get that lump of firestone out of his butt - a nice roll with a greenrider. That would change his mind about the Weyr real quick!
