You Do Well In Other Areas

Writers: Bree, Elaine
Date Posted: 28th September 2005

Characters: O'dan, O'rian
Description: O'dan spends a few moments chatting with his son to stave off boredom in the infirmary.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 2 of Turn 3

O'dan was awake when his son peeked around the curtain, and desperate for someone to talk to. Days and nights bled together sometimes and the concotions that the healers kept pouring down his throat made it hard to keep track of time. With so many people still feeling angry with him, he found himself lonely more often than not. "Odarian! Come in and keep your injured old father company for a few moments."

Odarian bit his lip, still not used to having his father around the infirmary. "Ok," he responded warily, "I guess I can take a small break."
He came in and sat beside the bed. "You're looking a little better" he said, not sure what to talk about.

"Would be hard to be looking worse," he replied, grinning a little. He wasn't entirely sure how to deal with a son, but the boy had gotten old enough to be interesting when he hadn't been looking. "I'm feeling a lot better, though."

"Yes, that is a good point" Odarian sighed. There were so many people around the infirmary still from the last month's tradgedy, and there was so little he could do to help. **I still have a lot to learn** he thought.
Odarian couldn't even assess how his father was progressing.
"I bet you can't wait to leave here."

"I do miss my weyr," O'dan admitted. "Though it's nice to get to see you from time to time. And they've taken good care of me. Your uncle Dantial especially. Have you gotten to spend some time with him?"

"Yes actually, bits here an there." Odarian suprised himself in wanting to get to know his uncle more. He had never been particularly close to his blood relatives, but dantial seemed a good role model.
"I can learn a lot from him."

"He's a good healer. Like our father..." O'dan hadn't spent a lot of time thinking about his family in a long time, but it seemed like a good thing to tell his son. "Your grandfather is a Master Healer at the Healer Hall."

Odarian was suprised, not that he couldn't imagine a relative a Master, he had just really not thought about grandparents. "I guess healing runs in the family then?" With thread falling again he had choosen healing as a craft to do his part. **Protecting the protecters** he chuckled at the phrase he often told himself.

O'dan laughed. "You could say that... in the same way you would say that Thread is a little annoying. You're a healer born, my lad... back more generations than anyone cares to count. I'm the odd one out in the family, since I was never all that good."

"Sometimes its good to be the unique one," Odarian responded with rewording.
Although the thought he was continuing some sort of tradition made Odarian smile, he was worried his father was being self depricating. "You do well in other areas."

"And worse in a few, too." It was said lightly, but it was hard to miss the darker meaning behind the words with the infirmary full of proof that O'dan had been a _very_ bad Weyrleader.

Odarian obviously knew to what he refered to. It was still a sore subject, and would probably conintue to be for a long time. Maybe it always would be. Silence hung and Odarian, reaching to break it simply repeated his last comment. "But you do well, in others."

"Some things I do," O'dan replied, grinning. "A few of my favorite things, as well. And what about you? Have you picked up any of the family charm along with the family healing skill?"

Odarian couldn't help smiling. But how does one talk about this with your _dad._ "That charm has a life of its own. I'm just a victum of it..." he smiled smuggly. "A willing victum."

O'dan grinned proudly. "I should hope so. Embrace it, my boy... there is nothing quite so lovely in life as a pretty lady."

Odarian barked a laugh in response. "Possibly, possibly, I won't try to disagree with you, you're suposed to humor patients." But he winked, since he honestly did not _completely_ disagree.

"You'll learn the truth of that soon enough if you don't know it already,"
O'dan replied with an easy smile. "But for now, how about you do a little less humouring of your old father and instead go and find your uncle. Maybe Dantial will give me some of his tasty pain teas."

"Well," Odarian smiled with a shrug while getting up, "since you asked so nicely. I should be getting on with my chores soon anyways. Are you sure there isn't anything else besides the teas?"
