A Check Up

Characters: N'kalen, O'dan
Description: N'kalen checks in on O'dan and Kizynth
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 9 of Turn 4

N'kalen walked to O'dan's quarters. It was time for a check up on Kizynth. It was still uncertain if he would ever fly again. N'kalen paused outside the entryway and called out, "O'dan, it is N'kalen."

"Come in!" O'dan was in the middle of the room, both crutches held slightly off the ground as he tested his injured leg. "Kizynth is on his ledge," he said distractedly. "He's expecting you."

N'kalen smiled. "Greetings O'dan." He walked to the ledge. "Greetings Kizynth. How are you feeling today?"

The bronze rumbled a greeting and lifted his head slightly. O'dan laughed as he followed N'kalen a little more slowly in the direction of Kizynth's ledge. "He says he's feeling excellent. And something about wanting to try to fly, but I already told him he had better not try anything before he's ready."

"I'm sure the queens would have a fit if he tried anything!" He turned to his patient. "No flying Kizynth. You are grounded."

O'dan laughed. "That's right, you big bronze lump. Don't make me send Traelyn and Nyith after you. Behave for N'kalen."

This time Kizynth's rumble was annoyed, but he settled down to let N'kalen check on him.

N'kalen took his time, carefully checking over the badly damaged wing.
He gently manipulated the joints and carefully oversaw the membrane that was knitting back together. "O'dan, do you see this area here?" N'kalen asked as he pointed to a small section where the membrane was still rough and uneven.

O'dan pulled his crutches back into place and made his way over to where N'kalen was examining Kizynth's hide. "Yes. Does that need extra attention?"

"Yes, it does. I will send up a salve for you to rub gently into the membrane there to help it heal better. I'll have to make it up fresh for you."

"I've got a few weyrlings and candidates who help me take care of him,"
O'dan replied absently, studying the lump of scars. "I'll tell them what to do, though. Do you think he might be able to try flying sometime soon?"

N'kalen paused. "Well, I will want to see how that patch is healing.
Overall, he is doing much better than was initially expected. He'll have to do some lengthy physical therapy and conditioning before I'll want to see him in the skies. But, it is possible."

O'dan's face broke out into a wide grin. "I told all of you healers of people _and_ of dragons that you were underestimating us," he said rather smugly, leaning against Kizynth's side. "We're both too stubborn to be grounded this young."

"Stubborn. Yes Sir." N'kalen grinned. "But remember, it is only possible, not certain. And there is a long, long road ahead."

"Don't worry, N'kalen." O'dan gave his dragon's side a fond pat. "Neither of us are planning on going any faster than we can. We'll behave."
