Aishara

Aishara

Aishara sat and waited her turn, slightly nervous and bit puzzled. She had been told to report in to the infirmary. She didn't know why, since she was perfectly healthy young woman. Even the heavy work of weyrlinghood didn't cause her anything more serious than blisters and muscle ache.

"Are you Aishara?" a healer with Masters knots and bushy mustache asked as he peeked his head around the corner. "Oh, but of course you are.
Come with me please, dear. I'm Pacham, the Weyrhealer. Come on now, don't be shy."

"Yes, sir, " Aishara said obiedently and got up. "I'm not sure why I'm here," she confessed when she entered the office.

"Oh, its nothing to worry about, greenrider," Pacham assured her. "We just have no information about you and it would be important to have.
Of course we will send to your home Hold to get a copy of your records, but in the mean time, I would just like to talk to you."

"All right, sounds logical to me," Aishara smiled.

"Well, the other candidates had a little time to get all this finished _before_ the Hatching," the Weyrhealer smiled. "Congratulations, by the way."

"Thank you," Aishara said demuredly.

"Now, tell me, where are you from?" The Weyrhealer pulled out a writing styllus and a form.

"Emerald Falls Hold, the main hold. My father is the local Master beastcrafter," she told.

"So who would your usual Healer have been?" He could look it up, but having the name and location at hand would save time.

Aishara mentioned the name of the hold's long time healer.

Pacham nodded as he wrote down the name. "And your last full check up was when?"

"Uuh, couple of turns ago?" Aishara couldn't remember. She rarely had any need to see healer.

"We will need you to get a full check-up in the next couple sevendays then." It was important to have updated records on each of their weyrlings and riders. "Now, the most important question, how are you adjusting to all these changes? Are you feeling at home here?"

"Sometimes I still feel totally at lost," Aishara confessed.

Pacham nodded sympathetically. "Its only natural, dear. This was completely unexpected. But know that you would not have been found by your pretty little green if you didn't belong here."

Aishara nodded. "It's made me realize how sheltered my life has been, how easy and care-free."

"Being a weyrling can be hard work," Pacham agreed. "Especially when you weren't prepared for it."

Aishara nodded again.

"I know your life has gone through a lot of changes very fast. You've had to leave a home and a life back in your Hold and suddenly have to adjust to a whole new one you didn't have time to prepare yourself for.
Have you found anyone you can talk to yet?" The weyrhealer strongly believed a persons mental health was just as important as their physical health.

"I've befriended some of the other weyrlings and I have grandmother here," Aishara replied.

"That's good, that's good," Pacham nodded. "I'm glad you have family here. Now have you been feeling homesick at all?"

"Not actually. I mean I miss home and it's people, but it's not making me lose my night's sleep."

"Good, good," the Weyrhealer nodded. Homesickness and sleeploss was something that should be guarded against, especially in her case when she had no chance to say goodbye to her old life. "Well, if you ever do start to feel homesick, just know that its a perfectly natural part of adjusting to a new life and there are lots of people here who would love to help you through it."

"Yes, sir," Aishara replied.

"All right, then. Do you have any questions at all?" He doubted it, but it was a nice way to wrap up the interview.

"Erh, do you have anything for callouses?" Aishara asked timidly.

"What kind of callouses?"

Aishara showed her hands. All that scrubbing Ayumith's lovely green hide showed on them.

"Well, I can give you a lotion for them, but I think you're going to find that you will need callouses to protect the vulnerable skin underneath. Take a look at a dragonrider's hand. They all are calloused." It was just another fact of dragonrider life.

"All right," Aishara replied. There went her fine, well-tended hands.
Oh,well, it was life.
