Cerran struggled to withhold a yawn and failed blinking sleepily. He shifted; stretching in what he hoped was a subtle way in his seat in an effort to relieve his discomfort from sitting still so long. He knew the Assistant Weyrlingmaster's long-winded speech about weyr ranking and how to tell rank was really important but he was bored, hungry and the man's monotonous way of talking was lulling him to sleep. It was nearing dinnertime and he'd been sitting for what felt like hours, so long in fact that his backside was numb. He was struggling to stop himself from fidgeting, falling asleep or yawning, he thought he was failing on all three. He glared enviously down at Sky, curled up oblivious and asleep in his lap. If only he could do them same, but he thought falling asleep was rather rude. Looking around he noticed with some relief that he wasn't the only one having trouble staying awake and paying attention. With some amusement he noticed a few of the younger male Candidates and one female from his seat at the back actually had nodded off. Others were blinking like drowsy weyrling dragons and stifling yawns of their own.
Regardless of how bored and sleepy he was Cerran tried to force his attention back to what the man was saying. But found despite his best efforts he was drifting off and hadn't even realized he'd fallen into a doze till the Candidate next to him nudged him awake, whispering that the class was over. Straightening with a groan he reached up with his hands and massaged his stiff neck. He smiled ruefully at her, a little embarrassed at having fallen asleep in the middle of class. "I haven't done that in turns! Not since my junior apprentice days." He said sheepishly, stretching himself properly this time, feeling his muscles stretching in relief.
"It can get a bit repetitive. Think of it this way it cold be worse. You could impress without knowing any of it." She shuddered at the thought. "I'm Aidiata." She offered a hand.
Cerran accepted her hand and shook it. "Cerran, I've seen you in most of the classes we've had. So you must have been here longer then I have." He replied in friendly tone. "I'm not sure knowing nothing would be so bad. When my brother Impressed he arrived on the day the Hatching started, knowing nothing."
"A little longer." She smiled as she collected her notes. "Yes but I bet he wished he had known some of what to expect. I know I would. I don't want to make any mistakes."
Cerran chuckled. "You are probably right. What did you do before you came to the weyr? I'm a journeyman beasthealer, just." He said.
Cerran nudged Sky to wake him up as he gathered up his own notes and pencil. With a soft creel Sky stretched, yawning hugely as he opened his eyes, blinking sleepily. Cerran gently moved his flit into the crook of his arm, feeling Sky's tail wrap loosely around his arm and began gathering up his gear he stood, gesturing politely for the other candidate to proceed him.
"I was learning healing from my Grandmother. She was a retired healer. She believed everyone is born with a calling for a craft. She used to say she couldn't figure mine out. I like to learn things. In the end she started teaching me what she knew best." She shrugged and smiled. "Now I'm here and may have found that calling."
Cerran grinned at her. "I know that feeling. I did love being a beastcrafter but one always has that itch in the back of your head that you could be doing more. Only my itch didn't really show it till I was here. I only came to visit my brother you know, staying wasn't the plan."
"Well, you are in the right place now. What do you think about the weyr? Do you like it?" She asked.
"I'm not sure, I think I like it. It's very different from a hold or hall for a start. What about you?" Cerran replied, his expression interested.
"I think I've come to like it. I'm more comfortable now than I used to be. i'm even doing better at making friends." She smiled.
"Is this your first time standing or have you done all this before?" He queried.
" I feel awfully green since it's my first time. I can't imagine what it's like to get left on the Sands. My brother Impressed his first time round so he missed that particular experience. But knowing my luck it'll be me left behind on the Sands." He admitted wryly.
"It's my first time too. I'm nervous. I think you'll do fine." SHe smiled.
Cerran shrugged. "I don't think i've ever been so nervous, anxious and excited in my life! It's hard to believe that those eggs will be hatching in a few days." He commented.
"But thanks for your confidence. I'm sure you'll Impress too. A dragon would be crazy to pass any of us up, we're a good group." He continued good-naturedly as he followed her out.
