Description: Daiirue has dinner with Cerran and his brother A'ran....
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 5 of Turn 3
Daiirue stayed close to Cerran as they wound through the dining hall. It was pretty full, and he was beginning to regret agreeing to eat with Cerran and his brother. He could have simply gotten some food to go, and eaten while curled up with a good book. He was tired, and only halfway through Windblown Hearts -admittedly for the thousandth time, but he loved that book.
Vree interrupted his thoughts by creeling in his ear. The little bronze was hungry, and he wasn't going to let his owner keep him from it!
Daiirue sighed, and stepped back a moment, letting a pair of men -were they really a _pair_?- pass with their trays before hurrying to catch up with Cerran.
Cerran glanced over his shoulder to make sure he hadn't lost Daiirue in the chaos of the Dining Caverns. He was reassured to see the Candidate was still following him and smiled, even though he looked a bit overwhelmed and he sympathized. After a month of being at the Weyr he still wasn't used to so many people in one place or being around so many of the famed dragonriders.
"Cery!" The deep familiar voice of his brother shouted from his far left and he turned in that direction with a grin. He signaled to the tall redhead that he was going to join the end of the line at the buffet table before joining him. His brother nodded and signaled back that he understood. A'ran sat back down at the table he was at and Cerran saw him go back to eating his food as he chatted to a male rider to his left. Sky perched on his shoulder, still creeling with hunger recognized A'ran and unfolded his wings and glided towards him.
"Traitor" Cerran called laughingly after his flit as he saw where he was going. It appeared Sky was too hungry to wait with him when the flit knew A'ran fed him. Cerran's smile expanded into a grin as he saw his brother try to shoo Sky away from him but the flit was determined.
"I see your flit is more loyal and more patient then Sky." He commented drolly as they joined the end of the line, as he noticed the bronze flit was still there.
Daiirue smiled as Vree chirped proudly, aware that they were talking about him. "Not really. He just doesn't know as many people as your Sky does.
That, and I think he's hoping to see what offered. He loves sticking his head in things. I'm assuming that's your brother Sky flew to?"
"Yep, that's A'ran. Do you have any siblings? I'm afraid he's just one of mine" Cerran replied as he grabbed a plate and a tray, selecting food as he talked.
"I'm the seventh of eleven. My parents fostered me out with two of my brothers to a cousin when I was nine." Daiirue shrugged. "I'm not really close to them." He grabbed a plate, and considered the selection for a moment before grabbing some rolls and herdbeast. He paused. "Any idea what that is?" He pointed, and quickly grabbed Vree by the neck before he could stick his nose in.
Cerran glanced over his shoulder as he put a good heaping of mashed tubers on his plate. "Nope, looks like some sort of vegetable dish to me. You don't like vegetables?"
"I don't mind them." Daiirue said absently as he snagged a cup of chilled fruit juice. "I just didn't recognize that dish. I've never seen some of the foods they get here. They didn't have them at the hall."
"Yeah, I must admit, I'm still unfamiliar with a lot of the foods they present us with. That looks nice" Cerran commented as he picked up a bowl that had some sort of fruit pudding and cream, adding it to his plate along with a cup of the same fruit juice as Daiirue. Finished with his selection he waited for Daiiure to finish selecting what he wanted.
Daiirue snagged a fruit filled pastry that looked promising, and followed the other candidate back to the tables. He had to pull up short a few times to let people pass in front of him, but managed to keep the other candidate in sight until he reached the table where A'ran was. He slid silently into the seat alongside Cerran, feeling uncertain.
"Now that your here can you can feed this brat of yours." A'ran greeted his brother as Cerran sat down indicating Sky who was chewing something, eyes closed in pleasure. "Your friend has one too I see, don't tell me I'll be harassed by two now!"
Cerran laughed as he settled himself across from his brother. "So sorry but he didn't want to wait, he has no patience when he's hungry." He teased his brother. "My friend is Daiirue, he's a Candidate like me and even newer here then I am. I'm afraid I don't know his flit's name. Daiirue, this is A'ran my brother and the famous family dragonrider to date." Cerran said indicating the pair of people he was introducing.
"Flits are nothing but stomachs and squeaking noises." The male dragonrider next to A'ran commented good-naturedly. "Seeing as A'ran has politely introduced me, I am F'lis. We're in the same wing and graduated from the same class."
A'ran smiled at Daiirue and reached across the table to shake his hand, his grip firm but friendly. "If you've attached yourself to Cerran here i pity you Daiirue. Watch out for his mouth and Sky here.
They're trouble."' Cerran threw a roll at A'ran and made sure it hit his shoulder hard.
"Unfair shot brother," He said shaking his head but his grin made light of himself.
A'ran laughed and bit into the roll Cerran had thrown at him, breaking off a piece to feed to Sky. Cerran reached across as his brother had and shook F'lis's hand. "You see what I get to put up with Daiirue? My own brother doesn't take me seriously." Cerran commented to his new friend as he sat back down and sipped at his fruit juice.
Daiirue grinned, his uncertainty dropping away and being replaced with...
jealousy? His brothers had never been like this. They had been more interested in removing another competitor to the hold. "They may be trouble, but they're certainly friendly." He told A'ran, secretly relieved that F'lis had been introduced as a friend and not a lover. "And my second mouth is Vree. Watch your cups, he's nosy." He added as he handed Vree a piece of herdbeast.
A'ran grinned back. "Curiosity isn't such a bad trait to have, although you might want to warn your flit that curiosity has a way of biting back."
Cerran laughed. "Speaking from experience brother?." Cerran teased, arching an eyebrow. "Did you know that A'ran here was always the one getting the rest of us into mischief for sticking his own nose into everything? Being mother's favorite he never got bitten when we got hauled up on the mat when his curiosity landed us in trouble. So I doubt he's ever felt the bite of curiosity, but the backsides of the rest of us certainly did." Cerran whispered loudly to Daiirue, his voice amused. Taking a bite of the herdbeast he chewed and swallowed enjoying the tender, flavored meat.
"What? Why are you still blaming me? I didn't hear you or the others complaining or staying out of it at the time. Since I never forced any of you into it, you can't blame me because you lot were to slow and got caught." A'ran defended himself, his tone equally amused.
"So Daiirue what will you call yourself if you Impress? What colour would you prefer?" A'ran inquired curiously, genuinely interested.
Daiirue shrugged. "I really haven't dared think about it too much.
Daiirue doesn't really shorten into anything but D'rue anyway. But after watching this little glutton..." He held up another slice of meat for Vree, who snatched it off the knife. "...Make a fool of himself with every female available, I don't think I'd want a bronze." He admitted. "Did you...
have a preference when you stood?" He asked curiously.
A'ran shrugged chewing a mouthful of food and swallowing. "Not really, I found my whole experience as a Candidate pretty bewildering. I was brought in days before the Hatching so I hadn't really settled in before I Impressed. But I'm glad I Impressed my blue because I don't think I would have done the Weyr any favors if I'd Impressed bronze.
Plus he's much easier to clean and oil then a bronze is." A''ran replied frankly.
Daiirue blinked. He hadn't really thought about dragons that way before.
Every little boy dreamed of Impressing a bronze. All the stories and legends and novels he read had bronzeriders or the occasional brownrider as the hero. No one had ever really pointed out something that practical about the smaller colors before. "I wouldn't have thought of that." He admitted.
"Most Candidates and even some rider's don't really think about it, it is true everybody wants a bronze." A'ran said dryly, but he smiled to soften his tone.
"I wouldn't mind a bronze. I don't think I'd suit a blue or green too well but I don't think I'd want the looming responsibility of a bronze either. Making wingsecond or wingleader might be a good challenge but I wouldn't want to be a Weyrleader, ever." Cerran commented, shuddering comically at the idea of being Weyrleader but his tone was quite serious.
"Leaving yourself a bit short there aren't you brother? Not many colours left out of there, unless your harboring ambitions to Impress a queen." A'ran teased.
Cerran made a rude gesture at his brother. "Of course I don't want to Impress the queen, I'm not a female! I just wouldn't want the kind of responsibility of being Weyrleader, because lets face it bronzes all like to try for the queen." Cerran retorted.
"What do you think?" Cerran asked Daiirue curiously.
"I don't think you have much chance at a queen in this clutch." Daiirue admitted with a smile. "But you were the one telling me that it's pretty random who the dragon chooses. How are we to know if the dragon sees something we don't? Besides, they train the bronzeriders to do all the stuff needed for leadership -at least that's what they said in class. If your bronze caught a queen, you may not like it, but if you work at it I'm sure you could do well."
Cerran nodded. "Perhaps your right Daiirue." He said thoughtfully, offering a piece of herdbeast to Sky.
Then he grinned. "I think I'd just be grateful to Impress at all, regardless of colour. I'll have any dragon that wants me."
A'ran grinned back. "Any dragon that chooses you brother would have to be rather _special_" He teased his brother.
Cerran ignored him and continued with his meal.
Daiirue smiled into his food, but said nothing as Cerran ignored him and continued with his meal.
