Sometime after H'taysh's adventure and later admission, Q'vettan found time to watch the latest weyrlings in their drills. They were a good group, even if one of the browns still struggled to get into the air. His rider looked familiar, though he couldn't quite place him. J'nic had scheduled sweep practice with them for most of the morning, leaving Q'vettan plenty of time to meet with the rest of the Weyrlingstaff.
"Viseya, S'ros. I won't be long." Q'vettan said as he sat in what was usually J'nic's spot, carefully moving some of the Weyrlingmaster's hidework to the side of his desk. "I want to tell you about an incident with one of the new riders. He was in Riyanth's last clutch, so not in your current cohort. He accidentally traveled between times-- and, thankfully, knew enough to come and report it to me."
S’ros wanted to gush about what an adventure that must have been and how he wished such a thing might have happened to him, but he knew better than that by now. Instead, he simply nodded.
Though his face likely betrayed his internal excitement.
“Is there… anything we need to do?” he asked.
Q'vettan's pleasantly neutral expression turned severe as he watched S'ros' expression. "Is there something else you want to say about this wingrider's near-death experience, Weyrlingmaster?" He asked, his voice low. "Surely, as someone on staff, you understand that this could have ended in a tragedy we never would have known about."
“I never hesitate to say what's on my mind, sir!” S’ros insisted cheerfully. “It’s a great relief to know no one was hurt. But I want to focus on how we can help going forward.”
“Which one was it?” Viseya was going down the list of likely riders from the last class. “And he understood what he’d accidentally done?”
Q'vettan's gaze remained on S'ros for a heartbeat longer. He would need to meet with J'nic later to talk about the suitability of this new weyrlingmaster. He turned his attention to Viseya. "H'taysh and Selkirth. He understood the gravity of the situation and rushed right to his Wingleader. From his description, he understood quickly enough that he left minimal impact. We're lucky that's all he did. It did prompt me to consider why and how we're withholding this information from the fighting wings. I spoke with J'nic and Thiseta, and we've decided it'll be for the best to include all weyrlings in the lessons on travel /between/ times."
“We hide it because the more people who know, the higher the chance someone does something foolish. More than one of our candidates have a tragic backstory they might think they can change,” Viseya pointed out, although there was no real fire in the protest, just resigned pessimism. Even if this was a bad idea, they could hardly go back now.
"Tragic backstories aren't exclusive to the greens and blues, unfortunately." Q'vettan said, "We're already putting a lot of trust in the youth to not attempt changing their lives. There's also River Bluff transfers, Thayan Peak survivors, or anyone with any kind of guilt about a bad Threadfall. We will communicate the dangers and consequences severely and seriously enough," a side look at S'ros again, "to ensure that the Wings can hold this knowledge safely."
“I’ll be every bit as severe and serious with each of them as if they were my own,” said S’ros. After all, his own could very well be in this position soon enough.
Not that he had ever once been serious or severe in his life.
Viseya nodded, more in acquiescence than agreement. “I’ll see if J’nic has reached out to R’lor about how the lesson went at Dolphin Cove. I like learning from other peoples’ missteps, and I was in the dark on the subject until not too long ago. We won’t drop the ball.”
Q'vettan watched the pair. S’ros’ cheerfulness grated slightly against the gravity of the situation, and Viseya’s quiet resignation was…appropriate, perhaps, with the difference between their ranks. She had a good head on her shoulders, at least. "I appreciate that. Hopefully R'lor has had an easier time than the Wingleaders will. The weyrlings haven't had that information purposely hidden from them. See if J'nic has reached out to the Dragonsfall Weyrlingmaster, too. He's had to teach that aspect for much longer."
“Yes sir,” Viseya said. “If that’s all, we’ll let you get back to your day.”
