K'mai waited, giving the Weyrleaders time to greet important dignitaries, speak to the new weyrlings, and have a few dances. Then he hung around nearby and waited until they finished a conversation with a minor Lord.
"Weyrwoman Thiseta." He said with a bow. "Weyrleader Q'vettan. Congratulations on a lovely Hatching. I met Weyrleader Q'vettan at Panitath's Hatching, but I don't believe we've had the pleasure, Weyrwoman. I'm K'mai, of blue Sebeth. It's an honor."
"K'mai of blue Sebeth." Thiseta smiled, wondering why his name sounded familiar. "Welcome to Barrier Lake Weyr. Have you been here before?"
"I'm a fairly frequent visitor," the bluerider said. "I have a number of friends here."
"There are so many lovely folk at Barrier Lake, aren't there? Imbeth and I felt very welcomed when we transferred here," Thiseta said brightly. Perhaps that wasn't entirely true, but she couldn't resist the opportunity to talk up her Weyr's inhabitants. "Now that I know you, please don't be shy about saying hello when you come visit. Or perhaps you're thinking of transferring from Dragonsfall Weyr?"
"Despite the horrid weather, I've settled in at Dragonsfall." K'mai had tried to convince Uetia to transfer soon after the new Weyr opened because he didn't want to go without her and Sabia, but now he was glad she'd chosen to stay. I'serin wouldn't have come to him the night after leading his first 'Fall if K'mai had been living somewhere else, and their relationship wouldn't have grown into what it was.
Q'vettan watched the exchange with lazy attentiveness, wine glass held loosely between two fingers and a faint curve to his mouth that could pass for polite interest or wry amusement. K'mai had timed his approach well, waiting until the last of the politics was out of the way. "Dragonsfall's weather isn't so bad." He added mildly, "Though after a decade at Igen, I don't know how well I'd handle the winter storms anymore. I miss skating on the lake, though. I'll have to invite myself over while the lake is still frozen."
"There are a few fun things to do in the cold," K'mai said. "The Dragonsfall natives skate circles around me, but at least now I spend more time on my skates than on my . . . butt."
The Weyrwoman hid a smile. "Congratulations on your prowess."
"My prowess lies in other areas." Oops. K'mai cleared his throat and went on. "But I didn't mean to talk about that. I'm here to ask a small favor, if you would be so kind to indulge me."
Q'vettan quirked an eyebrow at him. "Do tell." He said dryly, "I expect this is your second attempt at such an indulgence."
K'mai flashed him a smile. "You did say I had to get the Weyrwoman's permission."
Thiseta raised an eyebrow at Q'vettan. "The Weyrwoman's permission for what, exactly?"
Q'vettan raised an eyebrow back. "For a dance," He answered, smooth as oil on calm water. "He asked at Dolphin Cove's last hatching feast, inspired by N'vanik's display, but I told him I only dance if my Weyrwoman wishes it." His gaze flicked again to K'mai, the faintest smirk curling at the edge of his mouth. "Meant with _her_, mind you, not that you needed her leave. You've got bite, pup, I'll give you that. You'd have me poach my Weyrwoman's moment at her own hatching feast? I'm not about to steal her thunder just so you can make a spectacle of yourself."
"I have no wish to overshadow you at your own Hatching, Weyrwoman," K'mai said, feeling his chance slip away. "I don't want to be a spectacle like N'vanik and Z'kim . . . well, that _would_ be fun, but I don't think that's Q'vettan's style anyway. I was only hoping for a nice, respectable dance. I'd be honored to dance with you as well, Weyrwoman, if you were so inclined."
She smiled, feeling a little like the last girl chosen for the waterball team. There was an undercurrent here that she was not privy to. "Thank you kindly, but I am quite happy to rest for a bit. It has been a long day and I suspect it shall be a long night for me as well."
"If you would prefer to rest, then please allow me to bring you a drink or some food," K'mai said. "I'm sure you have many eager hands around here, but it would be my honor."
Thiseta beamed. She was never able to ignore a request to fetch her something. "I would love a glass of wine, if you are heading that direction. A white, I think?"
"Of course, Weyrwoman." K'mai inclined his head before turning to Q'vettan. "I don't suppose I can hope for a dance once I've delivered her wine?"
"I don't suppose you can." Q'vettan answered, without inflection, not bothering to dress them in humor or pleasantry. The faint curl at the edge of his mouth vanished; the mask of politeness smoothed into something closer to indifference. A flat refusal for someone refusing to take a hint.
"I will take a red, however, if you are delivering wine."
No fun. Well, most Weyrleaders were too serious and K'mai hadn't expected them all to suddenly be up for a good time. "My pleasure, Weyrleader." He headed off to get their drinks, wondering if he might be able to find a Wingleader to dance with.
