Description: Sh’del talks to Cyradis about taking L’fael under her wing for training
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 11, day 27 of Turn 11
A rumble of thunder tore through the sky. Sh’del paused for a moment
to breathe in the cooler air that came with the calmness before the
storm, thankful for a reprieve from the relentless heat of the past
sevendays. Another rumble of thunder broke the stillness of a Weyr one
day after a Fall. He quickened his steps to Cyradis’ Weyr, not wanting
to be caught out and soaked by the rain that was surely coming. The
dark clouds that filled the sky over the
ocean threatened.
“Hey Cyradis, you in?” He knocked on her door as he looked over his
shoulder at the storm. He really should have done this earlier, but a
certain sleeping brown lump hadn’t told him a storm was on his way.
"Yes," she called, smiling. "Come on in Sh'del.”
“Hiya,” he said as he walked into the safety of her weyr. “You have a
moment? I wanted to talk with you about one of the weyrlings, L’fael.”
"Okay," she nodded. "Do you know if he's made contact with Briata yet?"
The look Sh’del gave her was comical. “I forgot all about her.” He
brought his palm up to his forehead and smacked it. “I’ll hook them up
as soon as I get back, unless this storm is really bad, then I’ll wait
til tomorrow.” He looked out her doorway when another flash of
lighting ripped across the sky. He counted ten and then the rumble of
thunder filled the air. “Ten miles away.”
She couldn't help the smile. "At least we have doors instead of
curtains like Dragonsfall." She looked at the brownrider expectantly.
"Did you have any other ideas?"
“Yeah, with L’fael.” Again there was another flash of lighting, with a
loud rumble of thunder that lingered. “He’s our only rider who can
hear other dragons. I’m just wondering about throwing him to your
mercies to train up to help us during ‘Fall. Surely it would be an
advantage to the Weyr during threadfall.”
"Of course," she nodded. "But I don't want to over tax him when he's
still a Weyrling. He seems a bit timid and I'd like to see him grow
into the job rather than feel forced. Make sense?"
“It makes total sense, which is why I thought if I talk to you now
whilst he’s still a weyrling, that we can ease him into the role.
Like, if he comes to you maybe twice a sevenday for an hour or so when
you’re not too busy.” He emphasised the ‘not’ bit, knowing that as
Weyrwoman, she was the busiest person in the Weyr.
"Also, I don't want to make him a target of discontent on the part of
other Weyrlings who might perceive this as special treatment." She
tilted her head. "Do you have a way to deal with that?"
“Oh, don’t worry about that, I was planning on doing it when we have
the bronzeriders ago off to bug wingleaders, and brownriders to go
annoy some wingseconds, and the blue and green kids to do the same
with wingthirds. Then we can just slip L’fael over to you to train up
for the queen’s wing and to learn to use his talents to help you.” He
jumped when a clap of thunder sounded almost overhead. Tiny green
Trouble popped out of the air, chattered in fear. She dove for her
person, burying her head into the crook of his elbow.
Shadow chirped almost a question from the other side of the room and
arrowed to his own person.
"What's going on," Cyradis asked.
A clap of thunder roared across the sky. Sh’del could feel its
vibration under his feet. “I think that,” he said to Cyradis, gently
taking her by the shoulder like she was one of his weyrlings and
moving her further into the weyr. Just as he did so the rain began.
"I love thunderstorms," Cyradis smiled up at Sh'del. She wasn't sure
if it was from her childhood or just acquired at the Weyr. It was
spectacular and beautiful unless you were flying 'fall. Then it was
dangerous.
“Well, you’re in the right Weyr for that!” Sh’del teased. “At least
it’s just a storm and not a hurricane.” He led her to the safety of
her inner weyr, much to Trouble’s relief. The tiny green whistled at
Shadow and flew to a comfortable looking cushion to curl up.
Shadow didn't miss the invitation and floated over to snuggle up with the little green.
"Want a cup of tea or klah?" She asked. "We can discuss your young protege."
“A cup of tea sounds wonderful.” He smiled at the much smaller woman, glad not to have to go out in the storm anytime soon.
