Description: Jaylene and her brothers and Zariah have a few beers after a ‘Fall
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 3 of Turn 11
“Faranth I’m going to kill him,” Jaylene said to Zariah. She picked up
a small corner of a pie and threw it at J’nne. He was, after all,
playing the absolute most annoying dirge on his fiddle.
When it missed he just grinned and launched into a more over the top
song. She threatened to throw the entire pie at him. J’nne, in turn,
just stuck his tongue out at her and kept playing, exaggerating the
notes for a comical effect.
“Just ignore him, baby brothers feed on annoying their big sisters,”
J’zen piped in, taking a long drink of his beer. “What do you think,
Zariah? Death or just ignore him?”
"I don't think it's quite worthy of death. But if he doesn't find
something a little more upbeat to play, he might put us all to sleep,
and if I get sleepy, I'm going back to my weyr," she threatened. "But
whatever you do, don't throw the pie. I can push through the dirge if
there's more pie."
“Oh, I hear you there, girlfriend,” J’zen said and pulled the pie out
of Jaylene’s reach. “It’d be a shame to waste such a lovely pie on
such a silly boy.”
“Pie you said?” J’nne launched into a silly song about a girl baking
pies that had…well…more than fruit in her pies.
"Well, that's cheerier, at least. You know, I thought we were going to
drink and gossip. I didn't realize we were getting personal
entertainment. Should I have brought coin for a tip?" Zariah teased.
“Gossip you said?” J’nne stopped playing with a comically audible
screech. “Who are we gossiping about?”
J’zen rolled his eyes and said, “You know that old B’varen? Well, that
old canine is barking up all the young bakers trees, like he’d have a
chance!”
“That’s all you’ve got?” J’nne grinned at his older brother. “How
about what’s going to happen to this Weyr?”
"Oh, what's our category? Natural disaster? How about "freak out of
season blizzard"? Oh, "what crazy accident are the weyrlings going to
get into"? I'm betting someone drops firesteeone on the werylingmaster.
Leadership wise... I haven't decided my guess yet." Zariah finished
her drink and reached for a refill.
“That’s not gossip,” J’nne moaned, “That’s every day at this place!”
He placed the violin in its case and grinned at Zariah.
“Cheeky!” Jaylene slapped him over the head. “You sure Tribeth is
really a bronze?” She rolled her eyes at the other two.
"Are you implying bronzeriders can't be cheeky? Because I've known a
few," Zariah said, grinning.
“True, but they always have a touch of arrogance with their cheeky.” Jaylene grinned at her baby brother, so glad that the colour of his dragon hadn’t changed him one bit.
“Of course I can be a jackarse, if you want,” J’nne pipped in, doing his best impression of an overbearing old bronze rider trying to get the attention of one of the server girls.
J’zen watched the girl laugh and walk away, ignoring him. “Well done, J’nne.”
"Don’t encourage that," Zariah scolded. "J'nne can stay a pleasant young man who doesn't harass the servers, if he pleases. We need more of that."
“True,” J’zen muttered. “My last Flight was gotten by some up his own backside bronzerider…” He shuddered at the thought of the afters.
J’nne gave his brother a sympathetic look. “Some people…” He hadn’t won a large amount of Flights, but the ones he did win, he had always been polite afterwards, even that one time when it had been Catrien’s and she had all but tried to kill him afterwards.
"I just try to remember the poor boys have it rougher than we do. Relsath goes up on a schedule, not whenever she pleases, and she mostly gets to decide who wins, so it's almost never anyone I'd really object to. Poor E'kavas's Roquath would chase every day if he let him. Can you imagine?" Zariah shuddered dramatically.
J’nne sighed dramatically. “Yeah, at least Tribeth doesn’t show much of a randy side, thank Faranth. Though it might help explain some of the older, more obnoxious bronze riders.”
“Yeah, but some blues and browns are pretty randy and their riders are perfectly nice people,” Jaylene pipped in.
Zariah shrugged, "I just avoid the touchy ones. Some of them are lovely. X'eri and I get along just fine," she felt obliged to defend her son's father. "And L'val's one of the better wingleaders I've flown with. The annoying ones are easy to avoid- they're loud about it."
“You know…this reminds me of something…” With a mischievous glint in his eye, J’nne drew the violin out of its case and, before anyone could stop him, launched into a decidedly raunchy tavern song about the exploits of a bronze rider and a holder girl.
Zariah laughed, "Alright, if we're getting into the raunchy song part of the evening, I think I'm heading back to my book, my slippers, and my bed. Try not to ruffle any feathers, alright? Someone might break that violin."
“Or we could just kill him,” Jaylene muttered at her laughing brother.
"Well, I definitely don't want to be involved in that," Zariah said, still chuckling, "goodnight, and good luck, J'nne."
