}: Panitath’s is sad:{
Sh’del glanced at his brown, who sat close by the weyrlings. The sun
was so brilliant on the brown’s hide that it made Loranth look like a
shinny race runner. *Okay, thanks for letting me know. Tell her I’ll
stop in and see hers*
The weyrling teaching was as good as done anyways. He had been in
charge of the older weyrlings today, and around a quarter of them had
injuries from yesterday’s Fall. He gritted his teeth in annoyance.
That was a high number even if they were young and inexperienced. He
looked them over and was met with sad faces in turn. “Alright, we’re
going to practice that move again tomorrow, but class is dismissed for
today.”
He gripped the staff he used as a cane and again gritted his teeth. It
was a constant reminder that things would never be normal for him
again, that he would never get back the mobility he once had before
breaking his leg so badly, nor would he ever get his old title back,
or move back into the fighting wings again. Loranth crooned and looked
his way. *Sorry* It wasn’t Sh’del’s way to feel sorry for himself, but
sometimes he felt the loss of his old life keenly.
Even with a bum leg it didn’t take him long to get a bottle of white
wine and another bottle of juice from the kitchens. When he got to
Cyradis’ door, he knocked gently less he wake her son up. “Cyradis?
It’s just me, Sh’del.” He hoped she was up for a visit.
"Come in Sh'del," she called. She was so tired. Lack of sleep was
harder to deal with these days so she swung her feet off the couch and
pasted on a smile of welcome for the brownrider.
He opened the door and looked at her. “Hey Cyradis, it’s just me, your
old friend, you don’t need to put on that smile if you don’t want to.”
She looked so tired, his heart went out to her. He held up his hands
as he shut the door with his shoulder and walked in. “Wine or juice? I
got you both.” He placed the two bottles down and looked around for a
couple glasses.
"The juice would be great right now," she said. "If I have wine I
won't wake up until tomorrow," she chuckled.
“That might not be a bad idea.” He gave her a sympathetic look before
pouring her a generous glass of juice. “Want to talk about it?” He
asked her in a gentle voice.
She shrugged. "I'm afraid I haven't really organized my thoughts
enough to know my own feeling other than I'm hurt and sad. K'deren
went with his father. I should probably have expected it. That whole
family sticks together."
“That they do.” Sh’del pored himself a glass of juice and sat down on
the couch beside her. “I think the K’don boy has stayed, but you’re
right, the rest have gone. It’s sad. I think they’re going to be
missed more than perhaps they realise. But you know we’re here for
you, and you’ve got N’vanik. But if you need any errands run or
messages sent just get a hold of me and I’ll do them for you.”
Anything to ease any pain she was in or make her life a bit easier.
"He has," she smiled. "He came to see me right after his father left.
He has such a good heart." She looked at Sh'del with a soft smile.
"Thank you my friend." Then she took a deep breath. "How's the leg?"
“Oh, it’s what it is…” His voice started out as the usual cheerful Sh’del but
he trailed off, unexpected tears springing to his eyes. He glanced
over to her and rubbed his face. “It…just…” He rubbed his stubble
before continuing. “I miss being how it used to be…being just normal
and not in pain, you know? I hate this.”
"Yeah," she nodded sadly. "I know." There was a wealth of
understanding behind her words.
He glanced over at her and gave a rueful grin. “And here I came over
to cheer you up.” He briefly leaned his head against her shoulder. In
a soft voice he said, “If I’ve not said it before, thank you for being
a good friend.”
"Oh you have done my dear," she replied. "There aren't that many here
that I can be open with these days. Both Saibra and Kapera have moved
on to their own Weyrs and times like these I really miss them. Ya
know?"
“I hear you, I still miss E’ril.” He had been closer to his old
Weyrlingmaster 3rd than anyone. “I’m not sure R’lor likes me too
much.” He struggled his shoulders helplessly. All he could do was stay
steady until the man knew he was on the bluerider’s side. “I’m sorry
you don’t have Saibra or Kapera but I’ll try to lend an ear for you.”
He smiled and tossed her hair like a big brother would, though he was
a couple of years younger than Cyradis.
She chuckled at his playfulness. "Watch it," she said in mock severity
and patted her hair back into place. "Thanks," she said after a
moment. "Sometimes it makes things easier to just sit with someone who
knows and understands your pain."
